I know you probably wore a lot more crazy clothes, but name only 5 articles of clothing that you actually purchased and wore that you would not be caught dead in today.

Me...

1. Patent Leather go-go boots
2. Nylon parachute pants
3. Mini skirt
4. Parka jacket
5. Can-can slip

Me? Purchase clothes that I wouldn't wear? Impossible.

On the other hand, my mom purchased all of my clothes when I was in high school and younger (was I spoiled? naaaaaaah! ). Lots of 80's stuff I'd still wear again. The 70's stuff on the other hand? NEVER! If you'll count stuff like that, even though *I* didn't purchase it:

1. Ugly red paisley blouse that tied at mid-gut
2. Jeans with tulip patches on the back that matched ugly red paisley blouse.
3. Those stupid combs we used to carry in our back pockets. (That ought to count since it was an accessory)
4. Purple plaid pants and vest that I still have a picture of me wearing in 2nd grade
5. Any of those babydoll t-shirts with the "Love is..." characters on them.


In regards to your picks, Janice -
1. Nothing wrong with go-go boots.
2. I wore parachute pants also...and like them.

4. If it gets cold, you'll want that.

Remember the jackets with no sleeves? I can't remember what they were called. They look like a vest and were thick but they had no sleeves. I remember those being the top thing down here in the early 80s.

You mean down vests (surely not in Alabama) or do you mean these kinds of jackets?

They were kind of like that but had a lining in them. They might had been down vest. I will have to search and see if I can find a picture of one.

Let's see....five 70's items

1) Light purple velvet hiphugger pants - oh yes, i was quite cool!
2) Dark purple turtleneck body suit - matched the ugly purple pants
3) Smock tops - even skinny girls looked pregnant!
4) Plaid miniskirt w/matching jacket with weejun shoes - don't even try to bend over in this skirt
5) Bandanas for the hair - tied kerchief style at the nape of the neck

What's worse is... I was BORN in 1988...

1. Cow-print pants.
2. A shirt with pineapples all over it.
3. A light blue shirt saying "I'm a BIG BROTHER!"
4. Cowboy boots in the 7th grade. That was awful.
5. A bright orange and pink-ish shirt from Disney World that my girlfriend bought me. Thank goodness, I wore it once, and she completely forgot about it. I hope.

I can only think of three things, and my mom bought me all of them (they were hard for me to wear back then, too)

2. a shirt that had the same style as parachute pants (it was bad, so bad I can't describe it)

Things I've worn that I'll never wear again

Polyester liesure suit.

Sears Toughskins jeans. (they never faded and always stayed a metallic blue-gray color)

Most of my neckties.



Things I've worn that may raise eyebrows but I would wear again:

Camoflage Converse High tops
Very loud Hawaiian shirt
Skintight lycra cycling pants (when cycling it's a requirement, but watch the people looking when you stop at a store to get a drink)

The mork from ork rainbow suspenders! My sister and I both had the outfit with the shirt and pants that our aunt brought us one Christmas. This brings back memories.

2. Oxford shirts, with a tie of course!
3. Tight print tops, with ties at the waist, belly slightly showing.
4. Very tight pants but widely flared at the hem, so wide my shoes were completely hidden (watch any One Day at a Time ep, and you'll see these pants).
5. The Prairie look - full, flouncy skirts/dresses, Gunne Sax blouses and skirts.

PS - but there was one knitted vest I wish I had kept - it was so cool. Off white, open, no buttons or closures of any kind. Just curved up near the neck. But the cool thing was it had fringe all around it. I know if I had that still, Nina would have stolen it by now. LOL And oh, my old Desert Boots - how I loved wearing them! All the time.

My hip huggers were light purple brushed(soft, not hard lined) corduroy!

My bandanas were worn rolled as belts, a little later than the hip huggers, when I was back to wearing jeans with a waist.

And yes Mary, the Gunne Sax dresses, my fav was a sundress that I wore until it died!

And we can't forget the Earth Shoes!

wxmom - I loved my Gunne Sax dresses! In fact, I wore one for my second wedding - full length, pleated skirt, ivory satin, lace bodice. I had so many compliments on it!

Did anyone roll their bandanas up (point to point) and use them as a hairband? I did, tying them off to the side with a double knot, on the side of my head!

Did anyone wear the very tiny and short white jackets over their prairie skirts/tops/dresses? They curved near the bottom, had short sleeves, no closures.

I had one and sewed it myself....which is another question - was anyone into sewing their own clothes? I was! I even made my bell bottom pants wider! Extending them by 4 inches sometimes - they were huge!

Miss Mary- I never had the patience to sew, though my mom tried to teach me. I can draw, paint and do almost any craft imaginable, but when it comes to sewing I just lose it! ( though I did embroider stuff on my shirts and jeans) I know it frustrated my mom who made lots of our clothes. I fell in love with a gunne sax dress for my prom and wanted it sooooo bad, but couldn't afford it. My mom offered to make me one like it, so we went and picked out fabric and lace and ribbon and it turned out beautiful! When I got to the prom, 2 other girls were wearing the dress I had originally wanted!! I was so happy!

What about your hair style in the 70's? I liked the long straight look best. My hair was/is so straight that the Farrah look didn't do to well. I remember drying my hair with the first blowdryer. It was a Conair with the brush attachment that slid onto the blowdryer and was a hideous yellow/gold color. And it took forever to dry your hair!Then I'd try curling my hair with the steam mist heat rollers. Didn't do too good!
