Western Atlantic Tropical Summary - WATS UP on August 12, 2005

I covered TS Irene in a special WATS UP earlier today,so I'll focus on
other ongoing events in the western Atlantic.

We have several waves in the Caribbean Sea, none of which I expect
to develop into tropical cyclones. There is still a significant amount
of dry air in the Caribbean and western Atlantic, which will serve
as an inhibitor for development.

Invest 96L has a nice signature and looks well right now - but the future is
uncertain with a trough plowing south toward 96L. There's also
a fair amount of dry air ahead of 96L, but I still believe we'll see a
tropical depression in the next 24-48 hours.

96L definately looks formidable. I would think it should at least reach tropical storm status. That trough does looks like it may have some influence on it. Earlier it seemed like 96L might have been far enough to the south to avoid that, but it appears it will have to contend with it. Only time will tell.
