Well, 997mb is a little higher pressure than I anticipated ...

I'll echo that "wow" on an 80nm wide closed eye ...

Good temperature profile ...

Interesting that their surface wind estimate is higher than the max plight level wind ...

How can the system have an 80 nm wide eye, meaning an eye radius of 40 nm, yet recon. finds max. flight level winds in the NW quad. a mere 23 nm from the center. How can max. flight level winds be INSIDE the supposed "eye."

I think it's not an eye, but a wraparound strong band of convection around a "goard" structure, which has strong flight winds inside of it...much like Frances upon landfall in Florida.

That's what dry air will do to you.

That's what dry air will do to you.

You're correct, it's not an eye, just a ring of convection around the center. Many tropical storms have a ring of convection around the center, and generally diminishing winds inward from the ring.

If you look at the IR loop, it did look this afternoon like you could finally see wrapping convection, and that it was around a wide center, not a tight eye, at least that's what it looked like after seeing no center on visible or IR for so long.

So, it appears that 62 knots was the max 10 sec avg fl wind for the NE Quad... max 30 sec avg was 60 knots...
