hicksta,
Here's a photo of Mitch in 1998:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/history/mitch_b.jpg

Scorpion,
I just thought that it would be interesting to list them to see what people thought. I also listed them because Ivan was a Category 5 for part of his lifetime, Charley was a 145mph Category 4 at landfall, Jeanne got better organized into a 120mph major hurricane (Category 3) and Frances reached 145mph (Category 4) at least two times. Keith was also a Category 4 for aperiod of time, although it weakened later on into a tropical storm.

Sorry if I may have listed "unecessary storms"....

I don't think the "most powerful" hurricane really has anything to do with your topic. Your poll related to the hurricane with the "best sat presentation." Therefore, I don't feel you need to apologize for posting anything.

This is an opinion poll...post away folks!

Mac,
What I meant was that they were both powerful and appeared pretty good on imagery. Intensity and appearance are often connected, but not all the time.

Lile you said...

For Atlantic storms, Gilbert hands down.

But my favorite satellite photo of all time is of a Typhoon.

Typhoon Tip:

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/tropics/tip.htm

I've always loved the belly-button looking eye. Tip reached a minimum central pressure of 870 mb and was so large that if he was placed over the continental U.S.
he would almost cover the entire western half of the country!
At one point, TS force winds extended out 600 miles from the center of Tip!

Its hard to go against Mitch 98' but Isabell from 2003 is pretty darn amazing as well.

CAUTION...those folks out there still strapped in to older phone modems could wind up clogging your arteries on these...

For the rest of you...without a doubt, when it comes to unforgettable sat images, the "eyes" have it...

Here's a site where you can see archived images of past events, including hurricanes. Just type in where it says "Keyword Search" the name of the storm you want.

I said Isabel because of the five stars in her eye. That was scariest thing I ever saw!
