My Destin, Florida vacation

#1 Postby cajungal » Fri Aug 12, 2005 1:09 pm

Just got back last night from Destin, Florida. We arrived around 3:30 in the afternoon, Thursday, August 4th. The first 2 and half days of my vacation was a total washout. It rained Thursday afternoon, but let up enough that evening. So, we walked over to The Terrace and used their hot tub. Our hot tub was messed up by Hurricane Dennis. We were staying at the Pelican Beach Resort and The Terrace is run by the same company, so they let us use their hot tub. Friday and Saturday it poured down rain all day long into the night. Destin received over 7 inches of rain and there was a lot of street flooding. We had a ground unit and water was lapping at the front door of the condo. I got really depressed then because I thought my vacation was going to be a complete waste. They had an upper low sitting over us and according to the weather channel, the whole week was going to be a total washout. Well, Friday and Saturday, it was. There was little to do but sit in the condo and watch it storm. I could not even watch TV much because it was run by satellite and the channels kept going out and losing its signal. Friday night, we went out to eat at Fudpuckers. After Fudpuckers, my aunt and I were going to go ride the go-carts at The Track. (It stopped raining by then.) We waited in line for over 45 mins, then it was our turn. As soon as we fixing to get seated in the double go-cart, it started pouring! And they shut everything down! Just our luck! So, we had to leave and go back to the condo.
Saturday evening, we went eat supper at AJ's overlooking the Destin Harbor. Very popular place. And it finally quit raining! And the sun came out! After that, we had beautiful weather the rest of the trip. We went to Big Kahunas waterpark, we finally got to go back to The Track to ride the go-carts and bumper boats, and my aunt and I went to 2 nightclubs (Nighttown and Howl at the Moon) And of course, I spent lots of time on the beach and by the pool. My aunt does not like the heat, so she hardly ever came by the beach or the pool until late in the afternoon. And the old lady she brought with her never ventured out of the condo except to come out to eat. So, I had to spend a lot of time totally alone on the beach and by the pool without a single soul to speak to. I got a little depressed seeing all the happy families and couples. It made me feel like I was the only one all alone.

Purple flags were raised twice during my stay. I heard people saying that sharks were spotted close to shore. If that was the case, it sure did not keep the people out the water. But, nobody ventured very far out from the beach. I swam, but I constantly kept an eye on my surrondings and stayed close to shore. The beach was beautiful. The water was emerald green. But, at the edge was a lot of seaweed. I did not see much hurricane Dennis damage in Destin. The beach looked like nothing even happened. The only signs were that the tanning deck at our condo by the beach was destroyed and the hot tub got damaged. Even the Tiki bar on the beach looked fine.
I loved our condo-The Pelican Beach Resort. We had a ground level unit. It was a corner unit and it had the most perfect view of the beach and the gulf. I loved being at ground level. We could just walk out our unit and straight to the beach or pool. No having to worry about elevators. The condo had a store/Deli. The Deli sold deli sandwiches as well as burgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken fingers, salads and really good pizza. You had a choice of 2 pools. The main pool was beachfront and huge. And it had a waterfall accent. And they also had an indoor/swim to outdoor pool. Or you could walk to their sister property, The Terrace and use thier pool and hot tub. The condo also had a gym, but I never used it. I am lazy on vacation. The Tiki bar sold frozen drinks, but pricey. I bought a Pina Coloda and it was $7.00 for just a little paper cup. I never bought another after that. I thought the cup would of been a lot bigger.

You are so lucky that you live so close to Destin! I wish I could live out there, but would almost have to be a millionaire to live there! According to rumors that people were saying, sharks were spotted near the shore of the Pelican Beach Resort. I have never seen any while I was there; though. It could of been mistaken for dolphins. What did you think of my pics?

I buy at least 1 swimsuit a year. I love to swim, so I got addicted to buying new swimsuits. Most of those are from last year. I only bought 1 this year at the beginning of the summer from Old Navy. Yes, I did have a different swimsuit for every day for the whole week we were there.
