I believe that something on the order of 60% of the Big Easy Police Department have walked off the job.

You can't blame the police for walking off the job. This is something that the local police are in no way shape or form qualified to handle and they know it.

I agree. Besides these officers have also lost everything and may not know where their families are and if they are alive. It isn't what we want to think of police but after 5 days anyone would be a wits end.

Sorry, it's a disgrace. There are many, many other folks out there in the same situation who are working their tails off.

They are public servants and swore to that when they became police officers. I understand they have unimaginable stresses going, but quiting only makes the problem worse, as we are witnessing.

I heard an interview yesterday with 2 NOPD officers who left with their families and are in Dallas.

I have yet to see any confirmation of this. Can anyone post a link?

it was on fox this morning. they said they were quiting to either blend in with the mob, or because they felt they werent being allowed to defend themselves, and it was too dangerous

vbhoutex, I've seen it in a ton of articles, video reports, and eyewitness accounts. Here are a few articles.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... fer=canada (hit ctrl f and search for police to find the section of the article)

Just do a google news search for New orleans police quit

Or here's the link to the results: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&t ... olice+quit

Unfortunately the NOPD has a reputation for corruption. Obviously some of the officers have a committment to their badge and their oath, but some don't, and others may be quitting in frustration in part because of the ones that don't.

I heard one yesterday tell a reporter that they had no ammunition and couldn't dfend themselves. At the time I thought that very odd.

I've heard that a significant number drowned on the job, some quit, and some walked off the job after running out of ammo, no communations, armed thugs all over the street, and having worked 60 hours non-stop.

Don't knock too hard on public servants. It's not good policy by those who are served by them.

Last night, a good deal of the police just barricaded themselves up in their station. The firefight with the street-anarchists went on through the night. Yes, they actually did run low on ammo. There was a CNN reporter who decided to attach himself to them.

Well, I can twist it towards a more positive note. If they quit, then maybe someone(one of the smarter ones) will eventually convince the govenor to ask for more assistance and have martial law declared.

Listening to this report on CNN right now.Walking off the job. Say they cannot do their job being shot at.
