Far fetched possibillity but: Rita This week??????

#1 Postby spinfan4eva » Sun Sep 04, 2005 7:40 am

NOPR and then there would be only STVW names before its Alpha, Bravo, Charlie  Delta

Nate:

A WELL-DEFINED SURFACE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CENTERED ABOUT 400 MILES
NORTHEAST OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS IS DRIFTING SLOWLY
NORTHWARD. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE GRADUALLY BEEN
INCREASING THIS MORNING... AND UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE SOMEWHAT
FAVORABLE FOR SOME ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM TO OCCUR
OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

Ophelia

CLOUDINESS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BECOME A LITTLE MORE CONCENTRATED
OVER THE NORTHWEST AND CENTRAL BAHAMAS...THE FLORIDA STRAITS...AND
SOUTHEASTERN FLORIDA. THIS ACTIVITY IS ASSOCIATED WITH A NEARLY
STATIONARY SURFACE LOW PRESSURE TROUGH. SOME SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF
THIS SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS UPPER-LEVEL
WINDS GRADUALLY BECOME MORE FAVORABLE.

Phileppe (new model runs on 92L)

SHOWER ACTIVITY REMAINS LIMITED IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE
WESTWARD-MOVING TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED ABOUT 750 MILES EAST OF THE
LESSER ANTILLES. SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS NOT
EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

Rita

TROPICAL WAVE ADDED NEAR DAKAR S OF 22N MOVING W 10 KT WITH A
1009 MB LOW ALONG THE WAVE NEAR 14.5N18W. THE WAVE HAD A 45 KT
JET ON THE 00Z SOUNDING FROM DAKAR WITH DEEP LOW-LEVEL SW FLOW
UP TO 850 MB. WINDS HAVE RECENTLY TURNED TO THE SSE AT DAKAR..
INDICATING THE LOW IS PROBABLY JUST W OF THAT LOCATION.
ISOLATED MODERATE CONVECTION IS FROM 8N-16N BETWEEN 15W-20W WITH
ONE LARGE TSTM NEAR 15.5N18.5W. THIS WAVE SHOULD BRING AN
ENHANCED CHANCE OF RAIN TO THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS LATE TODAY
INTO MON.

That's military letters. It would be Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and so on . . .

But I only see 3 of those going anywhere this week, but 92L might still get somewhere, though it will take a good bit of work on its part.

I'm going to join in on the little play of names.

Although it is unlikely that ALL of these systems will develop, you never know in the peak of the hurricane season. If all of them do, here is what most likely will happen according to the development potential of each.

Nate/Ophelia: The surface low NE of the Bahamas (93L) and what will likely be 94L (vigorous eastern Atlantic low). It will be a close call, so any one of those could get either name.

Phillippe: NW Bahamas system

Rita: The tropical wave in the central Atlantic (92L)

Are you sure? I know the phonetic alphabet by heart and have never heard of beta, gamma(for c?), or epsilon. Are their 2 phonetic alphabets? You could be right but here is the phonetic alphabet which is the same as I know.

They use the Greek alphabet after the list runs out. The greek alphabet has Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, etc.
While the phonetic alphabet has Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta.

spinfan4eva,

It is called the Greek alphabet and please don't ask me how they came up with that ridiculous idea.

Here's a link:

Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon

This is the Greek Alphabet if I'm not mistaken.

They use the Greek alphabet mainly because it's a common alphabet that isn't confused with a, b, c, etc. It's also commonly used in math and science. Furthermore, the Greek alphabet doesn't have commonly used names like the phonic alphabet has.

Have they ever used the entire alphabet in a season? What would happen if they used the entire alphabet? Just start over at 'A' again?

Yea, I know the chance of that happening is extremely slim, but just wondering if it's EVER happened.

Well, while using names, the furthest we've been was T during 1995. However, had we used names in 1933, we would have reached W. In the event we do go beyond W (21 named storms), the Greek alphabet is used. There are no plans if we go beyond Omega (45 named storms) in a given year.

If we get to Beta and that name is retired, there won't be many large cities left on the coast of the U.S. in this part of the world.
