I really hope the toll is far lower than expected. Even then, it's still an unimaginable number for 2005 in the USA.
No doubt many bodies will never be found. Many probably washed into the Gulf along the Mississippi coastline. My brother-in-law from Mandeville heard that bodies in the Slidell area were being eaten by sharks and crabs.

Well now. That should do wonders for the local fishing/crabbing industry. Can't imagine anyone wanting to buy fish that might've feasted on people.
IIRC, they had the same problem (and local consumer reaction) after the Tsunami.
