Katrina Death Toll Still a Question

#1 Postby Thunder44 » Fri Sep 09, 2005 4:17 am

Article says it may not be as high as feared:

I think death toll may wind being 1000 to 2000.

I don't think much of the lower ninth ward has been searched - I fear that will be the worst location.

Also, I don't thing the accounting in Mississippi is anywhere near complete.

I really hope the toll is far lower than expected. Even then, it's still an unimaginable number for 2005 in the USA.

No doubt many bodies will never be found. Many probably washed into the Gulf along the Mississippi coastline. My brother-in-law from Mandeville heard that bodies in the Slidell area were being eaten by sharks and crabs.

I checked on Wikipedia this morning and it listed the current death toll as 601 direct fatalities. However, it also listed 35,000 as missing.

Well now. That should do wonders for the local fishing/crabbing industry. Can't imagine anyone wanting to buy fish that might've feasted on people.

IIRC, they had the same problem (and local consumer reaction) after the Tsunami.
