Disturbing Statistics 2004-2005 Tropical Cyclones

#1 Postby Tampa Bay Hurricane » Tue Sep 13, 2005 10:07 pm

Since 2004:
-Worst Disaster:Katrina
3 Majors have struck the gulf coast
Katrina
Ivan
Dennis
Charley (FL West Coast is part of Gulf Coast)

-Not as bad as Katrina but still a disturbing statistic:
8 storms have hit FL since 2004
Bonnie
Charley
Frances
Ivan
Jeanne
Arlene
Dennis
Katrina as Strong Cat 1 in SE FL

Katrina, Dennis, Ivan severely damaged/destroyed the Gulf Coast.

FL has been hit 8 times since 2004, but not as bad as Katrina on Gulf
Coast.

Especially when from 2000-2002 we only had 1 hurricane and that was Lili, then starting with 2003 each year got worse. I don't think many thought we could have a worse season than last year.

Here were the most expensive Tropical Systems pre 2003 (unadjusted)

1. Andrew
2. Hugo
3. Allison
4. Floyd
5. Fran

Now

1. Katrina ??
2. Andrew
3. Charley
4. Ivan
5. Frances
6. Hugo
7. Jeanne
8-10. Floyd/Isabel/ Dennis??

No, Charley was slightly more than Ivan.

Excuse the nitpicking here but CHarley was a major to strike the gulf coast also.

Yea you're right. FL West Coast is part of the Gulf Coast.
I have edited my original post to include this

Actually,

the Florida West Coast counts as a part of the East Coast, not the Gulf Coast. I am not sure why Dr Chris Landsea has made this classification, but he said that the pattern of impacts there are the same as the EC, not the GC, which is why the WC of Florida is considered as the East Coast

Interesting; Yup I would like to know what Landsea meant by pattern
of impacts...

the pattern is the long term cycles of east coast impacts. The WC of Florida seems to fit into that pattern, which is why it is considered as a part of the EC (which I disagree with, but thats how it is)
