Hurricanes have, in the past, tended to move to the right of their NHC landfall forecast point 60hrs out, and I am thinking Rita will be another example of this. Houston is sooo not looking good for me right now.

My only hope is that hopefully people learned the lesson of Katrina. Even if you think your home is safe and on high enough ground, it does not mean much in a strong Cat. 4/5 hurricane...it seems there are no rules with these suckers. I would not stay if I lived in one of the coastal Texas towns in this path!

I was just looking at the latest Satellite Images and it is unbelievable how much Rita is identical in appearance to Katrina.

Someone on another thread said that Rita is much smaller than Katrina.

Is this true?

I wish the NHC would develop a scale to compare the size of hurricanes.

Katrina was bigger but Rita is currently extending her core's radius, so the rest will follow if she keeps deepening.

Whoa! AVNI takes it to 160 knots. Most keep it at 4/5 hurricane. Cluster around Freeport.

You know, oneness, I was often curious when I was younger about what it would be like to be in the eye of a hurricane. but then I saw the devastation of Andrew and then Mitch, and then Katrina, and now that one is staring me in the face and heading right towards me, I don't want to see what the eye is like. After this, I never will either. Keep me away from the eye! :) I'm leaving tomorrow. Just a little continued jog slightly north of the projected path will give Houston the worst nightmare ever--for centuries it will never be forgotten. Even if it hits Freeport, we'll get more than 100 mph winds. And a storm surge so big that it could be used to recalibrate the windspeed-storm surge conversion equation for super-strong storms. It's scary. Who knows what I will be coming back to. The med school I go to could be devastated. At least most of the people I know are not taking this lightly and are getting out of town at the latest tomorrow morning. Oh well. Please pray for us! -vaffie

I have an overlayed pic of the two in a personal family album. Login as test/test and you can see the similarities.

couple of random thoughts

1) with Katrina we had an approaching trough lifting Katrina Northward, this trough helped erode the western side of Katrina as she was approaching landfall, i don't see this set up with Rita. With Rita the High is going to slide eastward and Rita will move NWerly on the west side of the retreating high, hence nothing to dry her out

2) even if Rita does weaken, if she maintains cat5 intensity for any length of we are likely going to see a cat5-like surge (like we saw with Ivan and Katrina) damage along the Texas coast. So even if Rita moves in as a cat3 or marginal cat4, we will see some horrific surge damage

3)Katrina sucks and Rita will suck. But one day (who knows when) those in SFLA are going to deal with a monster storm. Here's my concern for SFLA, everything from WPB south to Mia is developed and urbanized, that's 60 miles of coast. There is going to come a time when a cat4/5 is going to slam into Ft. Lauderdale moving due west and you will see 3 major metro areas in the core of a hurricane. Not to minimize what NO went thru with Katrina, or what Houston may go thru with Rita, or what Tampa/St. Pete may one day go thru, but damage totals for a cat4/5 cane going thru ft. lauderdale, mia and wpb would be astronomical
