Rita's name already retired?

#1 Postby Snowzealot » Wed Sep 21, 2005 10:52 pm

Does Rita's status as the third most powerful hurricane in Atlantic basin history guarantee that her name will be retired no matter what happens from now on?

Probably, it just has to hit as at least a strong Category 2 I would say. Which, doesn't exactly appear unlikely  .

I believe all Catagory 5's are automatically retired, just because Category 5's are so evil. So yes, she would be.

Perhaps Rhiannon will be the replacement name for Rita. Or Ramona. Either one sounds good to me, since even though Rita hasn't struck, it already will probably gets retired unless it hits Kenedy County, where Bret in '99 hit (and even then....I dunno).

Ryan sounds better.

Rita will be retired if she hits at Cat 2 or above.

Since Rita is a Spanish name, short for Margarita, the Spanish form of Margaret, they might try to replace it with another Spanish name. Rosa perhaps? Are there any Rosas in the hurricane name canon?

Doesn't it have to be a girl's name to replace it?

Rhonda sounds good.

Yes, it has to be female. And Rosa is currently in use in the EPAC.

I thought too about Rhonda, and that would also be a good replacement. I just know a girl named Rhiannon (it's a pretty name too in my opinion) and I just think Ramona would be a good choice too.

No. It could be the world's strongest hurricane and it wouldn't be retired. It has to cause significant damage and/or casualities.

Well... once again, that would depend on the damage and/or casualities, but at this point... even if it does weaken that much, the surge will remain very high.

No. Several category five's were not retired because they didn't cause significant damage and/or casualities. Some cateogry fives remain out to see thus, not so "evil."

Snowzealot wrote:Was Dennis retired yet?
No. No storm from this year has been retired yet. There will be a WMO meeting in Spring 2006 that will go over what names will be retired. However, the likelihood of retirement is high.

Rita is considered a Spanish name, in origin, therefore the replacement name will be a female-Spanish name.

I think you're right, it has to be a name from the same ethinicity, and it also has to be from the same gender. So to the poster that menitioned Ramona is on the right track, in my opinion.

Maybe we could have Hurricane RuPaul... I'm not sure exactly what gender of name that would make it... It would be a threat to Rhode Island most likely if they went with that choice :P
