boca_chris wrote:Again, I reiterate, it's fast-speed and track across the Everglades will hardly weaken it. So if it comes in as a CAT 4 expect a CAT 3 mimial. A CAT 3 would mean a CAT 2 etc.

This looks to be a more severe situation for Palm Beach/Broward/Dade than Jeanne/Frances of last year and Katrina.

chris is on to something here folks if it comes in over sofla.

yep - wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't cancel school until AFTER the storm has shown its face and damage. Unless it decides to take until Monday to get here.

NW Coral Springs checking in.

Just as a note, Broward Schools are closed (for students at least) on Friday due to a teacher planning day.

If it goes through, say, Key Largo, it sure will hit us pretty seriously.

Kind of an evacuation dillema here -- do we race all the way up to orlando, then find we're more in the path of the storm than if we'd stayed?

Recurve:

Why don't you consider going to the FIU shelter in SW Miami? It's not too far, pretty sturdy, and right next to the NHC. If the storm takes a more northerly track, you could easily get back to the Keys. If it takes a more southerly track (PLEASE NO!!!!!!) you would be safe....and have easier access back to the Keys when all is said and done. Plus, you wouldn't have to deal with a gazillion other people evacuating/traffic.

BUT you do have a very valid point. Where will all these west coasters/islanders evacuate to??? Hopefully things will be clearer by tomorrow evening.

Thanks Heather, that really is excellent advice for everyone in the Keys.

I could do what I did for Rita, a hotel in Broward that allows dogs to stay in the room, but that's a little too close to the more likely path I think.

I took the dog to the vet this afternoon and got all his shots updated so if I have to put him in a kennel somewhere they'll take him. The vet in Key Largo is on pretty high ground, but I couldn't evacuate without him (the dog, not the vet).

One thing for south Florida, a storm coming from the backside has most of its winds over land rather than water before they reach the coast, so there has to be some attenuation of the max wind. Course, the Everglades aren't much land, but it's something.

No, no, no. Take the doggie with you!

I think there is a pet friendly shelter here. You have to pre-register, but I think they were letting anyone with a pet in for Katrina or Rita..I forget which one. Assuming shelter will be open in Miami. Of course if the Keys are evacuated, FIU will be open.

One heck of a dilema!

There are shelters in Miami that allow animals now, but you have to pre-register. I'm not sure on how that works if you're in the Keys. Not something that would help this time (I could be wrong, but I think it takes time), but I wonder if you could register from the Keys in the future. Just a thought, for later.

That was great advice, Heather.

Edit: I took my time posting, sorry to repeat the above!

If anybody has anything on shelters that take pets, please post. I'll do some googling and see if I find anything.

I know hotels might not throw you out just because you snuck in a dog, but...well, we'll see.

I am going to be ready to leave if necessary. Shutters going up tomorrow, moving the sailboat and maybe throwing up just a bit depending on what the models do.

I told everybody I know back in May that this season had me uh, fretful. If the Keys take a direct hit, no one will get to us for days. This place is like Terrebonne Parish except without crawfish and good music.

On the Miami-Dade EOC site, there's a link to a PDF file on the front page entitled, "Pet Friendly Hurricane Evacuation Center Application Package". I don't have the reader installed yet, so I can't read it, sorry. Hope it helps.

I stayed at a pet friendly hotel in Homestead for Jeanne, it was called The Floridian. Not sure if that would help anyone out, I do know that it withstood Andrew though. Just thought I would post in case it would be of help.

A. Florida has it's evac act togehter a bit better than NO did. Practice makes perfect, I guess. (especially where pets are concerned)

B. If you catch a CAT 2-3 into a metro area down there, be ready to deal with big time post storm security issues...

Tomorrow morning, if the tracks don't change over our area...I will start to get real worried about this. I just didn't like the sound of Mtwakins' voice when he talked about SW FL/S FL impacts.
