If we do leave, it will probably be as late as "reasonably" possible...not the best plan, I know.

Linda:

What evacuation zone are you in? If you are not in 1, 2 or 3, then maybe just staying put is the best idea unless this bombs up to a 5 and stays that way until about 200 miles from the coast.

I think the smartest thing to do is just avoid the surge. If you are caught there late because of your husband's job, then just go inland to a shelter that is out of the surge area. The surge should dissipate quickly and the storm is supposed to move fast, so you'd be able to get back to your house fairly quickly. Now, how fast you'll have electric, etc., is still TBD. Do you have a generator?

From nbc-2.com

FORT MYERS — So what do you need to do right now in order to be prepared just in case Wilma comes to Southwest Florida?

- First, put up hurricane shutters if you have them. That task can often take a few hours, so the earlier you can attach them to your home, the better
- Clean up things in your yard that may blow around
- Replenish your hurricane supply kits - check flashlight batteries, candles, water, canned goods, and insurance information
- Look at potential evacuation plans and decide when you will leave and where you will go
- Go to the ATM or bank for some extra cash - just enough that you feel comfortable
- If you live in a low-lying area, head to the fire department to see if you can get some sand bags

Is this thread right place to post Tampa area stuff? I am hearing some action will be taken here since we could even get nasty weather up here.

Sure, but you could start a thread specific to your area, too! :)

Good grief! I just figured using 2004 population estimates, if Wilma hit southern Florida around Collier County, 6,475,124 people would be affected, at least another 856,151 people would be affected by tropical storm force winds. That gives us a grand total of 7,331,275 people in the current direct path of this storm. This is just from Manatee east to St. Lucie counties and below.

Hi Inotherwords,

Thanks for your suggestions. I am actually not sure what zone we're in. I tried to look it up on the Collier emergency site but the evacuation zone link is currently being updated. The landfalling hurricane map has us placed as a "Category 2." I'd say we're about 4 miles or so from the Gulf.

We just bought a generator this season. We decided to purchase one after being without power for a week after Charley. We also have a room air conditioner which we bought a few weeks ago when our a/c broke. Believe me, we'll stay if at all possible. I just want to have contingency plans in case we feel the need to go.

I have been lurking around storm2k for quite some time now and I figured I might as well join in and post. The last thing I heard about Charlotte County is that the emergency management was supposed to have a meeting at 5:30pm today to discuss possible further actions. I haven't heard anything else yet.

We have to leave as we are right on the coast in a frame structure but have made reservations at a hotel near the SW FL airport that takes pets. In the meantime we are packing the generator, gas, extra food, water, a dehumidifier and large fan and numerous supplies, extra clothes, etc. and taking them to a family home inland in Bonita that is well built and already has shutters. We're on our way there now to crank up the fridge/freezer and pack it with extra water. Each evening we'll haul more stuff over until Fri when we leave for good (hopefully, we'll have something to come home to.). The rest of our things that we can take-valuables, pictures, important papers and the rest of the food and water, clothes and of course the pets :D go with us to the hotel. I have so many hurricane supples including electronics, invertors, etc. plus food, water, flashlights, etc., etc. that it will take days to get it all moved (we only have the evenings)

This may be overkill but we are in a mandatory evacuation zone and I really don't want to be on the road, not knowing what part of FL will be the safest. For now, that's our plan. If for some reason we don't have to leave we'll just haul it all home again for next time.

Lynn

P.S. with Collier Co. being so far south, I can't believe our emergency management will wait until Thursday to start evacuations. Hopefully Kevin Cho will join us and shed more light on it.

Hi everyone! Long-time lurker, minimal poster. I have a little unofficial confirmation regarding the Collier County Commission EOC meeting scheduled for Thursday. That is in fact still the plan. As with anything, and I'm not stating anything everyone doesn't already know, this plan is subject to change and could be moved up should the NHC release an update that shows a significant increase in strength or a more certain path for Wilma.

The best advice for anyone is to understand the elevation at your home, and govern yourself accordingly. The FEMA Maps are a resource as well as either your homeowner's policy or survey of your property, should you have one. As others mentioned there is a County website for evacuation/emergency information, which I highly recommend people visit. Almost like clockwork, the first zone generally urged to evacuate is all Collier residents west and south of US41.

Katrina reinforced the need to be mindful of storm surge as water levels can easily exceed 30ft above normal tide. Dan Summers is a great EM and will do everything possible to protect residents within Collier.

Best of luck to all!

I'm surprised! Don't you think its alittle early? Its looks like its gonna go south of here like marco, naples I would think collier county.

This isn't a small storm like charlie. If it hits Naples, then Lee county will have serious problems as well.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I've really enjoyed reading the fine discussions on this board. I just can't believe that it looks like we might have to go through this again, especially after last year. At least we have some experience I suppose. Hopefully that will help everyone to be better prepared. :)

Glad to see a SW Fla thread for our counties being started - especially
for this storm !

Hopefully we will be able to help each other out with information and
happenings during the next few days.

I too am mostly a reader here, and sometimes poster - I am really
concerned with this one. I am in Ft. Myers.

Keep the info coming

Welcome all newbies!!! Glad to have you here.

Paul, what are your plans as far as Bonita is concerned. Staying, going?

Also, if anyone from Naples/Bonita/Ft. Myers wants to exchange phone numbers (moral support, assistance, etc.) please PM me.
