It's possible as long as Wilma stays in the Caribbean. I'm waiting for NHC to mention the FSU Superensemble, that's really the model I trust most, and it was the most bullish on both Katrina and Rita when they were both strengthening Cat 1's.

at landfall.Katrina was a CAT 5 out at sea

I am well aware that Katrina was a CAT 5 until she weakened just offshore. I was talking about a storm that weakens but maintains a higher category surge. Katrina pushed a terrific surge well in excess of what would be expected from a CAT 3 or 4. I think many people were caught off guard by the tremendous surge. That was the point I was trying to make.

Locals are calling for a Cat 4 weakening to a Cat 3 at landfall.

I like your idea better though. Or dissipation really is high on my list.

Cat 5 is definitely possible... I wouldn't say likely... but very possible. Especially with the pressure dropping like a rock already. We'll probably have a Cat 4 tomorrow morning.

Guess it's no longer just "possible" but likely.

I heard at 1:20am EDT that Wilma had sustained winds of 150mph, if she keeps strengthening then she'll probably get those 6 mph she needs to reach Cat 5. I still hope she weakens though before reaching landfall.

Oh, she'll definitely weaken prior to landfall. A hurricane can't maintain Category 5 for long.

I predict we'll be having another screaming match with Derek about her intensity at landfall.

These storms keep one-upping the other ones intensity wise. Katrina 902, Rita 897, Wilma 892.

I'd have to agree. These female storms whose names end in A (except for Maria) are playing 1up with each other. Hopefully Beta won't decide she wants to 1up Wilma :D

Thankfully, I don't think we have to worry about that anymore. After all, the Greek letters don't have a gender. ;)

Yeah, the Beta/Wilma joke was because if greek letters did have gender beta would be female (this season) with a name ending in A.
