The hunters are sampling the NE Quadrant, which for a hurricane moving WNW is not the strongest quadrant. Right front quadrant=NW Quadrant is strongest. Once they sample the winds there then we should have a more accurate measure of wind speed, and one that is probably not of Cat 3 strength.

We may get an idea of what would eventually have happened to Rita if she hadn't hit Louisiana. Agreed, similar to Rita with a very broad hurricane wind field far less intense than the pressure would normally generate.
