Huh? The flight that went up is still flying around, and will be doing so for quite some time.

nope, none of us did

The hunters are sampling the NE Quadrant, which for a hurricane moving WNW is not the strongest quadrant. Right front quadrant=NW Quadrant is strongest. Once they sample the winds there then we should have a more accurate measure of wind speed, and one that is probably not of Cat 3 strength.

Bigmoney - they sample the air each each of the quads while they are up there - they have only gotten the vortex for one so far.

Oh I thought that was it since they already posted the 1am advisory and did the vortex and all. I guess I will stay up till they get more samples in.

That's one broad wind field. Not that intense, but miles and miles of Cat 2 winds.

Go through EWRC for over 48 hours. Weaken about 50 knots...Makes you wonder.

We may get an idea of what would eventually have happened to Rita if she hadn't hit Louisiana. Agreed, similar to Rita with a very broad hurricane wind field far less intense than the pressure would normally generate.

Thanks for all the posting, Matt. I guess sub-900 storms are too routine for late nighters nowadays.

No, the EWRC is certainly not done. The inner wind maximum is still there and still respectable. Unless there was already an ERC to replace a 2 mile eye with a 5 mile one.

so, that vortex says closed "walls"...does this imply that there are still multiple eye walls? i thought the inner eye had been collapsing all night?

okay, so when can we expect to see that inner eyewall collapse and the big eye clear out? will it be a long time because the inner wall is still closed? or can it happen rapidly?
