Should the WMO/NHC add X, Y and Z names to the lists?
I think they should try to elongate the list a little (a la EPAC) and also come up with a "special" list if a season goes beyond letter Z. I really don't like the greek letter thing, especially after confirming that they would be retired (honestly it makes very little sense, just like retiring TD numbers).

I agree with Derek. It shouldn't happen. We've already seen people in here try to guess replacement names for the likely retirees this year and a lot of people either mess up the replacement name's origin, gender, or simply they choose a name that is either already on the EPAC list or is an Atlantic name for another year. (For example, a lot of people said 'Wendy' will be a good replacement for Wilma, but Wendy is already an Atlantic name). If we have this many problems with more common letters, imagine the pain with Q, U, X, Y, or Z.

Names
New names need to be added...why can't you use 2 names for each letter...It's only for ID purposes. So what if you had 2 names beginning with "A" etc...it's not like you would confuse the two...make the second storm of a particular letter alphabetized AFTER the first, e.g. ANN - 1st, AUDREY - 2nd (AN - AU)
That or just be done with it & go to numbers....what's in a name, or how bout "A rose by any other name is....."
It would take away the "fun" of painting plywood boards with "Go away 5" but other than that, what's the name good for anyhow?
We have a TV weather guy up here who names Winter Storms with the names of surrounding towns and it just sounds so foolish. In fact, we don't even name our blizzards up here. They can be killers too.
If we continue naming storms by Greek alphabet the weather report is gonna sound like a Grade B War Movie..."Alpha-beta-Romeo-Foxtrot 745....I'm hit ! Over"
That's just plain silly.

Which Hurricane Alpha do you mean ?
We keep this up, a few years down the road, we'll hear this conversation.
Do you mean Alpha of '05, Alpha '06 or Alpha '07 ?

If we have our third TS Alpha on 2007, we're in for three really scary years.

How about a 7th auxiliary list of names starting with 'a' that would be used whenever we get past 'w'. The aux. list wouldn't even have to go to 'w', just maybe to 'j'. That would make ten additional names to make a total of 31, enough for even the busiest seasons. And you could replace a name on the aux. list with another name if ever necessary.

We all have to remember that it took 72 years to even have this issue come up! It really isn't much worth arguing. The rarity of a year with an excess of 21 storms is enough of a reason not to worry about the naming of additional storms. People... this is the first time this has ever happened and the liklihood it will ever happen again in your lifetime is slim. So what if you have to debate which storm... Alpha 2005 or Alpha 2065??? -It isn't likely anyway.
I say we just keep doing what we are doing.
And whoever said there aren't many names hasn't picked up a baby name book lately... there are easily tens of thousands of names with many multicultural possibilities.

I think there's more than a miniscule possibility we'll see another year with 22 or more named storms in the next 10 to 20 years.
The only other viable option I can see other than using the Greek alphabet is to use a second set of names -- backup names, if you will. Surely you wouldn't need more than eight per year -- enough to get through the letter H (not as many names begin with the letters I, J, and K). A sample list:
Aidan
Brianna
Colby
Dina
Ezra
Fallon
Greg
Harold
If Aidan is retired, replace it with Aaron.

It looks like the Philippines use this method.
