Pretty people versus knowledgeable people. That is the problem. Not only the anchors, also their bosses deserve all the criticism. We are talking about a problem that seems contagious: anchors asking stupids questions or doing stupids comments, and lets be fair, the producers are guilty too.
I saw a CNN anchor woman asking the reporter in Cuba if the government had a weather agency like the NHC, because she thought that cubans were taken by surprise. The reporter, very diplomatic, answered that the people and tourist were aware of Wilma, and that Cuba has its own weather service but also keep in touch with the NHC.
Honestly I felt professionally betrayed when I heard that woman. As an anchor you have to learn and read about everything. In my case, I read a lot about weather and hurricanes and now I'm enrolled in an online course with the American Meteorological Society -- just as a hobby.
