Tis was a somber day this afternoon.  We had to pay respects to a fallen US soldier serving in Afghanistan. I was part of the honor guard team to move the soldier from a C130 plane to a van (for re-icing) and then off the van onto a C17 going back to the states (through Germany first). Onboard besides the deceased were several medical people going to Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.

The fallen soldier was at the wrong place at the wrong time... roadside bomb. He was killed; the others in the vehicle were injured. Sadly, this happens at a rate we cannot control. Yes, we can send armor to the war zones, however, all the armor in the world cannot protect us from uncontrollable IEDs (ie landmines).

It really didn't hit me that I handled an HR until I got home from work. The Army Sgt (that traveled with his friend) was impressed with the way we handled the transfer of the body and paid our respects. It just shows emotional roller coaster one can ride throughout their own military career. Taking life forgranted is something we shouldn't do... I know it is hard at times; however, we have to get over that demand and look at the bright side of the spectrum... your life could change in an instant... and it will never be to the extent of what you had before the life-altering event. Sadly, this soldier was married and had 2 children... 11 & 15.

I know that we are close to the war, however, here in Qatar, it really doesn't feel like a wartime situation.... in a sense we are busy with soldiers/cargo/planes coming in/out... but with the lack of personal protection (compared the other countries) we have it extremely easy.

Oh Shannon, I'm sending some really big (((HUGS))) over to you. That had to be so very difficult. What an honor it is that you were able to take care of this young man for his final journey home. You are so right, I've learned to enjoy and appreciate every minute. You just never know when you may loose a friend or loved one that means the world to you.

What a terrific person you are.
Thanks from all of us

Shannon, God Bless You, dear. Sometimes, with War, I just
don't know what to say...nothing seems appropriate. I get
a loss for words. I only want to reach out and hug you, and,
maybe that could speak for itself. I thought, and typed, and,
"no - that's not right"..."no, that isn't what I wanted to say"...

I guess, sometimes, tears and silence are all that can be said.

Life is short... I'll leave it at that... you can fill in the rest.

Today we had a huge sandstorm... you couldn't see 25m in front of you. Some how the pictures digitized... I'll see if I'm able to post any of them.

Needless to say, the countdown is under 50 days left... My group is leaving around Jan 6th.... unfortunately, after the holidays. It will still be nice to see everyone right after I get back from my tour of duty.

Well, Shannon, I know that you've got your time left there
counted down to the milliseconds! Is your family going to have
Christmas in January, when you get back? I know that some
folks do that. Then, again, just getting back home is a big
enough Christmas present, eh?

I found another big 'ole afghan to curl up under, if anyone
needs it. That fire feels so good - someone must have came
in and stoked the fire, earlier - thanks, whoever it was!
I believe I'll warm myself a while - I think I can hear
Old Jack Frost outside trying to nip at my nose!

Everyone have a good and safe evening.

Good afternoon. Thought I would stop in and grab a muffin, if there is any left.

Just sitting here waiting to get my girls from school. We are getting the annual kids christmas pictures done this afternnon. It is always eventful. Been better since the twins turned 5, 2 years back, but it is not easy getting everyone to coperate for the camera. lol. Just trying to get everyone there in their nice dresses and hairdos in one piece can be a challenge. Can't wait for it to be over. I will never forget when one of my girls at age 2, around the same age as my youngest now, fell off the back of the table they sit you on to take your picture. OMG, I just wanted to leave and give up. I love those pictures though, so pricless. So I will let ya'll know how it goes, I hope this one is uneventful. :D

Ta ta till later, have a great afternoon. 8-)

Amy - I remember my children's Thankgiving Feasts when they were in Kindergarten! They were so nice, the costumes, the excitement, the food. Hectic, but fun. Yes a lot of work goes into something like that. I also remember coming home from events like that, that I volunteered at and resting on the couch. I'd get a hand on my shoulder - Mommy, are you awake? LOL Yessssss, just resting my eyes! Once I chaired a booth at the festival, 4 solid hours of non-stop kids in a line for it. I had a choice of several, so I picked the pencil-pull, thinking oh how hard can this be? Well, it was the most popular booth/table and the line stretched beyond another table, we could barely keep up with it (I had help). I remember boxing it all up, walking home and taking a nap, not resting! LOL Someone told me later, "I can't believe you thought the pencil pull booth would be calm!". You learn.....remember that one!!!! Just a tid-bit from me.

I am finding less and less time to get in here, with T-giving coming up and my painting. It's done except for a few areas that might need an extra dab - have to really inspect it today. With my reading glasses and flashlight in hand - you over 40 folks will know what I mean! Of course my hubby says if you need both to make sure you have a good coat of paint, WHO is going to notice? LOL I said ~I~ will.......picky this way I guess....... OTown - I no longer have any pink in my house, on the walls that is. The whole area feels so different with greens! Tell your mom I said to go for it!

So if I don't post a lot for the next week, just know I'm thinking of you all, wishing everyone a wonderful Thankgiving and I'll be back to normal the week after T-giving.

Pojo - congrats on coming home soon. That's very good news!

Good morning everyone. The fire is warm this morning and that is a good thing because it is cloudy and cold here.

Shannon... we're all still anxiously awaiting to see that post on the computer that you have arrived home safely! :)

Well, we had a super weekend. Our debate team took 1st place at two seperate tournaments!! We knocked off one of the top schools in the country. I was so excited. I can't believe how well the kids are doing.

On a more dreary note... I have a 5 page reaction paper due Tuesday for a book that I am only partly finished with. Looks like I have a day of reading and relaxation ahead of me.

Have a super Sunday everyone!

Well. I'm having one of those days that movies put behind the creidts to introduce the character. Sitting in front of my computer obsessively storm-tracking, trying to water a flame war on another board, all while procrastinating about my homework. Anyone around here player Starcraft?

Hey guys. Glad to hear the painting is pretty much done Mary. I bet it looks great, and a welcome change I am sure. I like you am finding I am not in front of this computer as much with holidays sneaking up on me.

Amy, sounds like it was a fun event. My 3 year old is having theirs on Tues. Making my corn cassarole and brownies. When my twins were that age is was great to go to these events, and they usually had a few songs to sing as well. Just wonderful, I love it.

The past 2 days I have been working hard on a project with one of the twins, Taylor, for school. A model size indian double lean-to. We went to a park and collected sticks, bark and pine needles. I am so proud of her she did an awesome job, looks really good. It took alot of patience helping her, but well worth it. Now I am sure the other twin, Karlie, will have to do the same thing in the next week or so. Oh boy!

Okay gonna take a slice of that banana bread(I want you to bring me a real loaf this year Amy  ) and relax by the fire for a few. Been a dreary day here, raining off and on. A front is suppost to push through here by Tuesday and take the humidity and rain away. :D

Hey Colby, welcome to the pbs. I don't play starcraft, but feel free to come by and chat a while, have a cup tea or coffee, and eat whatever treats are brought by. Take a seat and warm up by the fire. Hope you cooled the fire on that other board. This a place you can come and know you will be welcome and there will be friendly chat. :D

Garrett, BIG congrats on the debate team wins, this week!
How many times do we have to tell you - you have a great
team because they have a great instructor!

Mary, will you please come paint at my house after you're
finished at your's? LOL, all the rooms need a new coat of paint,
but, the one room that drives me nuts is the bathroom. It's
actually small, so, it won't take you very long... This
house was built in the late 70's, and, it has that "groovy"
look...now, that was my generation, so, I don't mind SOME
grooviness, but, seeing the aqua blue swirling wallpaper
pattern, first thing in the morning, wakes me up before I
even get the coffee on! The garden tub, sink, and toilet
are aqua blue - try matching that! :)

Good luck with the school projects, OTown. I'm snitching
one of the last few slices of Amy's banana bread - it's too
good to pass up!

Have a good Sunday night, everyone!

Annette - you should email MTV and ask them if they'd like to 'borrow' your house for another '70s show. My girls were just into the last one......it was too funny. The teens had to wear 70s clothing, rely upon 70s gadgets, no cell phones, listen to vinyl or 8 track (were they around by then?).

Anyway, once you start this re-painting kick, it just leads from one room to another. You'll see....after the holidays, tackle the bathroom!

Hi everyone, just popping in.

Hi, Colby, dunno about the peach cobbler, but I think there's some banana bread over there. (Psst. when you DO bring the peach cobbler, make sure it has LOTS of crispy stuff on top)

It's good to hear about how everyone is doing.

For me? We finished most of our thanksgiving shopping. We got a free turkey at a local grocery store - we redeemed the points on our club card. Then my wifes sister and brother came by to visit my mother in law (she lives with us) and what did they bring, but another turkey!! My wife is convinced that they'll both fit in the oven, and I say "No Way!"

We're going to have 11 people here for thnxgiving dinner. I'd be just as happy going to "someone's (anyones) house for dinner, but I guess I have to suck it up for a day.

Well, I need to get to bed. Tomorrow will be an early morning.

See ya all later...

Ed - LOL @ 2 turkey's? :-)

I'm not so convinced they'll both fit into the oven either.....we're having dinner for 7 and I have a fresh turkey on order from our deli (we'll cook it) around 12 lbs. Maybe you could fit two small birds in, but most people roast much larger turkey's.

Good luck with that one!!! We have friends who swear by grilling turkey's (on a Webber Grill) or deep frying (that's out for us, the safety issue would worry me and we have a peanut allergy in the family). Guess you could throw one on your grill.....let us know how this turns out!
