Yep, the 2005 hurricane season just can't bear to say goodbye. Tropical Storm Zeta formed today in the east Atlantic -- and normally I'd say more, but I'm speechless.

For the record, this the 27th named storm of the Atlantic season, further extending the year's record-breaking streak. And it looks like it will be the last, unless some unexpected system sneaks in under the wire before Dick Clark presides over the ball drop.

How freaky is this? Well, Weather Underground's Jeff Masters says it looks like Zeta is the latest-forming Atlantic storm of all time, breaking the record held by Alice 2 in 1954. Alice also formed on Dec. 30 but did it earlier in the day. (Alice lasted until Jan. 6, 1955. And yes, 1954 had two storms named Alice. Don't ask me why, but you might want to think about it the next time the band in some Irish bar plays that song with the obscenity-laden chorus.)

Do you need to worry? Probably not. It's far from us, and the hurricane center expects Zeta to be zippo by New Year's Day -- although Masters says he wouldn't be surprised to see it last five days. And will anyone be shocked if it's joined by the first storm of 2006, Tropical Storm Alberto?

Life imitates satire: Just two days ago, some online wiseacre posted an official-looking hoax Zeta advisory warning that the storm had formed near the Leeward Islands. I won't say I fell for it ... but dang, now I have to take down my plywood again.Posted by Bob King at 12:39 PM |

Doc - Yeah I've got to change all the stuff I've done looking at this season compared to other season as well.

STORM AT 1200 UTC 30 DECEMBER 1954. MY WORKING BEST TRACK FOR ZETA
CURRENTLY SHOWS STORM STATUS BEGINNING AT 1200 UTC THIS MORNING...
WHICH TENTATIVELY ALLOWS ZETA TO TIE ALICE FOR THE LATEST FORMING
TROPICAL STORM IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN. HOWEVER...A CASE CAN BE MADE
FOR CONSIDERING ZETA A TROPICAL STORM AS EARLY AS 0600 UTC THIS
MORNING. WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE FINAL ANALYSIS OF ZETA'S TRACK
TO SEE EXACTLY WHERE ITS FORMATION FALLS RELATIVE TO ALICE'S.

Above is an extract of the 4 PM EST discussion in which James Franklin points out the record of Alice vs Zeta and they will wait for the reanalysis.

Looks like Jim Hughes was once again right in his forecast that a tropical system would form around the end of December. Scroll down to near the bottom to read his prediction.
