My computer is making a weird sound

#1 Postby CajunMama » Wed Feb 15, 2006 11:42 pm

My computer is making a high pitched whirring sound. The pitch drops a little then goes back to the high pitch. Could it be little dust bunnies running around inside the tower? It also rebooted itself on its on last night.

I guess i got my computer around 2002 to give you an idea how old it is. Does anyone have any clue what may be wrong? I keep forgetting to call
my computer guy.

IMO it seems like a hard drive problem, though I am by no means a computer expert. It could also be a power with the CPU fan or power supply.

Does not sound like a hard drive problem. Sounds more like the fan on the processor is starting to bite the big one. You might want to get it replaced ASAP, as if that dies, the Processor will overheat and die as well. The system rebooted last night because the processor was starting to build up to much heat most likely.

I just replaced my internal fan a week ago, and it sounds like a fan to me as well.
Very easy to replace on your own. I was overheating and kept having freeze issues amoung other wierd things happening. Everything is fine now. Good luck.

It definitely sounds like a fan problem. Eitehr the fan directly on the processor or the fan in the power supply. One or the other probably has a bad bearing and needs replacing.

Hmmm, that is odd. Now that doesn't sound like the fan, it should start and then may start acting funny after its been running a while, getting hot. Maybe it was the fan, and things got too hot for too long and something just got burned up, like the processor. Hope it is fixable.

Sounds like its to late...fan might have died, and the processor has overheated, and is now dead as well.

If you werent so far away, I would take a look at it and get it running again, but Lafayette, LA, is just a bit far away from Pittsburgh, PA

Not really...it'll only take you 23 hours to drive it! My parents were born and raised in Pittsburgh and we used to go visit them every summer when i was growing up and we would drive straight through.

My computer guy came today. He took my tower with him. He was able to put in the os disk and was able to do something and was going back to his office to try to see what the real problem is and to try to transfer my files and then reload the os. So we'll see!

I hope you get some good news. I am praying that it is not your motherboard. Mine did that about a year ago and I ended up losing everything and buying a new one. At least my Dell is running great...knock on wood.

you probably have the same problem I do. It sounds like the internal fan. I have a laptop and the fan is loud.... Best Buy checked out my laptop a couple weeks ago and said my fan worked perfectly... it was just loud to tell you it is working.
