The radio is indicating that the eyewall is crossing the coast just to the east of Onslow. They've had around 140mm of rain at Onslow in the last 2 hours. Looks like the worst of it will probably miss Exmouth, passing by at about midnight. It seems to be showing signs of weakening reasonably quickly now and the suggestion is that it will take a slightly inland track, passing Carnarvon in about 15 hours - fortunately about 80 kms inland from the town as a Cat 2. Its far enough east to have the winds coming up from the south along the coast, which is good in terms of reducing the possibility of storm surge at Onslow.

(That goal is the sort of reason that I now follow Australian Rules ;) )

TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 54
Issued at 9:10 pm WST on Thursday, 30 March 2006
BY THE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING CENTRE PERTH

A CYCLONE WARNING is now current for a SEVERE CATEGORY 4 CYCLONE for coastal
areas between Dampier and Kalbarri and inland to Mount Augustus and includes
inland parts of the western Pilbara district.

A CYCLONE WATCH extends south to Jurien Bay and inland to Yalgoo, and includes
inland parts of the Gascoyne and Central West districts.

At 9pm WST SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA was
5 kilometres to the southeast of Onslow and
115 kilometres east northeast of Exmouth
and was moving south southwest at 18 kilometres per hour over the past 6 hours.

The eye of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA was located over Onslow at 9pm.
Residents of Onslow are warned that very destructive winds will soon resume
without warning from a different direction. The cyclone briefly stalled as it
moved over the coast, but is expected to resume a south southwest track.

Destructive winds with gusts to 130 kilometres per hour are occurring on the
coast between Mardie and Exmouth. Very destructive gusts to 235 kilometres an
hour are expected near the cyclone centre, and are occurring on the coast in the
vicinity of Onslow.

Very destructive winds will extend southward though the western Pilbara
overnight and Friday as the system moves further south and gradually weakens.

Residents at Onslow are specifically warned of the potential for a very
dangerous storm tide as the cyclone centre crosses the coast. Tides are likely
to rise significantly above the normal high tide mark with very dangerous
flooding and damaging waves.

Widespread heavy rain and flooding are likely in the western Pilbara and western
Gascoyne over the next few days.

Location of centre : within 20 kilometres of
Latitude 21.7 South Longitude 115.2 East.
Recent movement : south southwest at 18 kilometres per hour.
Central Pressure : 940 hPa.
Maximum wind gusts : 235 kilometres per hour.
Severity Category : 4

FESA-State Emergency Service advises of the following alerts:
RED ALERT: People in or near the communities of Onslow, Mardie, Pannawonica, and
Nanutarra should move to shelter.
YELLOW ALERT: People in or near the communities of Exmouth and Coral Bay should
commence action in preparation for the possibility of destructive winds.
BLUE ALERT: People in other communities between Coral Bay and Carnarvon,
including Carnarvon, should start taking precautions.
ALL CLEAR WITH CAUTION: People in the communities of Port Samson, Wickham,
Roebourne, Karratha, Dampier, Whim Creek, Tom Price and Paraburdoo.

The eye of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA has moved to the southwest of Onslow
and winds have moderated rapidly at Onslow.

Gales with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are occurring on the coast between
Mardie and Exmouth. Very destructive winds with gusts to 170 kilometres an hour
are expected to the south and southwest of the cyclone centre for the next few
hours.

Destructive winds with gusts to 125 kilometres per hour will extend southward
though the western Pilbara at first on Friday morning as the system moves
further south and weakens.

Widespread heavy rain and flooding are likely in the western Pilbara and western
Gascoyne over the next few days.

Latitude 21.9 South Longitude 114.8 East.

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING CENTRE PERTH

A CYCLONE WARNING is now current for a CATEGORY 2 CYCLONE for coastal areas
between Onslow and Geraldton and across inland western Pilbara and Gascoyne and
far northern Central West district.
The CYCLONE WARNING for areas between Onslow and Mardie has been cancelled.
The CYCLONE WATCH for areas between Geraldton and Jurien Bay has been cancelled.


At 2am WST TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA was
70 kilometres to the south southwest of Onslow and
75 kilometres east southeast of Exmouth
and was moving south southwest at 14 kilometres per hour.

TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA is expected to move further inland and gradually weaken
during Friday and Saturday.

Destructive winds with gusts to 150 kilometres an hour are expected to the south
and southwest of the cyclone centre this morning.

Gales with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are possible over an area extending
between Onslow and Geraldton and inland to western parts of the Pilbara,
Gascoyne and the Central West district during Friday and early Saturday.

Widespread heavy rain and flooding are likely in the western Pilbara and western
Gascoyne over the next few days.

Details of TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA at 2am WST Friday.
Location of centre : within 35 kilometres of
Latitude 22.2 South Longitude 114.8 East.
Recent movement : south southwest at 14 kilometres per hour.
Central Pressure : 975 hPa.
Maximum wind gusts : 150 kilometres per hour.
Severity Category : 2

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING CENTRE PERTH

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Glenda has weakened below tropical cyclone intensity and the
CYCLONE WARNING for coastal areas of the Gascoyne between Carnarvon and Wooramel
Roadhouse, extending to inland parts of the western Gascoyne has been CANCELLED.

At 11am WST EX-TROPICAL CYCLONE GLENDA was
250 kilometres south southeast of Exmouth and
170 kilometres northeast of Carnarvon
and was moving south at 22 kilometres per hour.

Damaging winds are no longer expected from this system, however squally showers
and thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon in the Gascoyne, extending
to the eastern parts of the South West Land Division and Goldfields late today
and overnight.

Widespread heavy rain is possible in the southern Gascoyne, eastern parts of the
South West Land Division and the Goldfields later today and overnight.

Details of EX-Tropical Cyclone Glenda at 11am WST Friday.

Latitude 24 South Longitude 115 East.
Recent movement : south at 22 kilometres per hour.
