What I originally came to this thread for was to bring up the point that they are not using dropsondes on this mission, which is something else they did with Alberto. Is it some sort of policy not to use dropsondes on weak storms? Do they actually have a limitation on the number they can use? Basically, why not use them when they will provide actual surface readings?

There really isn't a need for dropsondes during weak storms. They can fix the position using their eyes and save some $$$.

How much does each dropsonde cost? It's probably a little more than a pretty penny . . .

The plane is now decending to the altitud it will be to collect the data from inside the storm.So let's leave the main recon thread for the data and all make our comments about it here.

Well, that was fun. Looks like recon might be a little late getting to the storm now. I wouldn't expect anything for at least another hour.

Yes,they were supposed to get to the storm by now.I was not here in the past hour an a half,what happened with the flight WindRunner?

If you go back on the bottom of page 18 of the main recon thread, the plane was flying in some sort of circle of of the Florida coast for about 40 minutes, and decended as they were coming out of this circle.

Yes, the winds were starting to pick up on the last dataset even though they are still outside of the convection.
