It is SUCH a quiet season...
...if you compare it to last season. Otherwise, it's actually above normal.
WHAT?! Did I just say 2006 is above normal?! YES!
Remember, 28 named storms has NEVER happened before. Before 2005, 21 was that magical number that many said was very unlikely to ever occur. Now that we've seen 28 named storms in the Atlantic, it appears that anything less than 28 is considered a bust.
Is 2006 a "slow" season? I can rattle off stats all day (matter of fact, I frequently post stats in the Tropical Analysis forum, but some don't bother looking there), but instead I'll simply post two images.
2006 compared to active seasons.
2006 compared to climatology.

Two on Texas. The first was developing, but didn't get particularly near storm status. Nonetheless, it produced a whopper of a rain event in coastal SE Texas. The second storm, also in Texas, actually formed a LLC in conjuction with tropical storm strength winds - but the LLC formed over land, so by the official definition it wasn't a TS.
Actually, maybe 5 - that invest off the Carolina 2 weeks ago had nice structure when the jet stream blew its head off. In any case, there's been a lot to watch.

LOL! There's a quote from Top Gun which could be adapted for hurricane fanatics, "You're not going to be happy unless you're going Mach-2 with your hair on fire and you know it." Maybe something like "You're not going to be happy unless there's 3 Cat 5's out there...!"
