Miss Mary, I'm so glad you loved it too. It's one of if not my favorite movie, ever. It took my sister and my mom a few years to even get me to watch it. I was like, "ewww, an old timey movie." lol

Now, my sister and I get together, spending a few nights at one of our houses to watch it, probably twice a year. We say, "hey, it's time for another Pride & Prejudice marathon. We catch something new every time we watch it, and walk away with a new phrase to say. One of my favs...about Mr. Collins..."Ugh! Take him away and feed him!"

I've been in love with Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) since I first saw it. hehe Every little thing in the movie is so meaningful, the looks, everything. I just love it.
I did like Keira as Lizzy (loved her in Pirates of the Caribbean), but I didn't liked her better. I think I'm just used to seeing Jennifer Ehle as Lizzy, and in my eyes, it's hard to measure up to that. It may make a difference that I saw the A&E version first...I dunno. But no doubt about Mr. Darcy. I did buy last year's movie though, and will watch it again.

Btw, you might also like Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow and Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson. They're not P&P, both both are excellent movies.

Kelly - reading how special P & P is to you and your sister, reminds me of how my oldest daughter and I feel about Anne of Green Gables. Or as we say - "our Anne". We feel possessive of that fictional character, if that makes any sense. Sounds as if you both do with Lizzy and Darcy. I completely understand how you prefer Jennifer E. over Kiera, not that Kiera didn't do a superb job in portraying Lizzy. I could quickly see a difference in Jennifer's portrayal of Lizzy. More mature, less giggly, but still in a charming way. It's funny how you describe needing to watch P & P again, Nina are like that about Anne. We just say - we need an Anne day! When she'd be home sick from school - I need to watch Anne, mom. Or especially after 9/11, we needed to watch it. For a more gentler, respectful way of life. We've picked up a few of Anne's phrases over the years - it's a Jonas day or she's a kindred spirit. If you haven't watched these 3 Anne movies, I highly recommend them but when they begin she's a pre-teen, so the storylines are younger than P & P. When Anne begins, she hates Gilbert Blythe. We were halfway thru a few books (there are 7), and we told a lady our Natural History Museum how much we were enjoying the Anne series. Nina asked her - does Anne marry Gilbert? Oh please tell me? I kept saying she would. The lady only smiled and said - keep reading. This was before we rented the movies! Now we own all 3.

I'll check out the other movie you mentioned. I think I'd like it! Thanks for the suggestion. I really enjoyed reading your post about the A & E version, b/c we resisted the whole Anne series at first too. My mom gave Nina the first book for a birthday gift. Nina looked at it and said, mmmm, never heard of it! As soon as I mentioned P & P to her, she knew of it. They read it in high school I think. One of her teachers highly recommended it. I just can't help but compare P & P to Anne of Green Gables. Many similarities.

This doesn't fall under movie rentals but we're into renting the UK version of The Office this summer. There are 3 seasons (3 is a two parter xmas special) and we've just watched 1 so far (6 episodes). We're trying to find the next two rentals. Blockbuster only carries the first season. Hollywood Video is supposed to carry all 3 seasons but when I called my local store, the clerk didn't even seem to know about The Office (US or UK version). All I can say is this mockumentary concept grows on you. We first watched the US version and love it. Can't wait for Season 3 to begin over here. When I kept reading that if you like the US version, you just have to see the UK one, we rented the first season. So glad we did!

Just a friendly suggestion if anyone is a fan of The Office/US version. I like both but find our version better, but that's probably b/c of the time I've invested in the US version's characters.

We watched The Bee Season, Pride & Prejudice, and North Country. All great movies.

Sorry, Mary. But I have to agree with Alicia. Flightplan was a waste.

Recent rentals...

The Lake House - same here, two thumbs up. Some people have had a hard time with this movie, no pun intended. One of my coworkers said she was very confused on what time it was. We kept saying we understood what was going on, the whole time. Maybe we've watched a few too many nutty movies in our time (I Heart Huckabees, that John Malcovich movie)! I want to watch While You Were Sleeping again now.....Sandra Bullock was cute in this movie.

The Break-up - just okay. I love Jennifer Aniston and I like Vince Vaughn enough. The main problem I had with this movie was there just weren't enough funny parts. And we never got to see the couple happy. A few flashbacks, in photos mostly and that was it. Even the alternate ending left us wanting more. Odd movie.

Click - funny at times but sad. Adam Sandler movies bore me anymore but our daughter wanted us to see it. She saw it in a theater with her friend and the friend's family. This friend's mom sobbed during the movie, she said it was so sad! Uh, I didn't cry. But it had funny parts.

Next, my husband wants to rent the cars movie. Has anyone seen it yet?

Cars was so funny! Loved it from beginning to end. If it was possible, I'd give it 4 thumbs up!

I struggled with this movie - too abstract for me, BUT, I wanted to understand it in the worst way. My wife lost patience with me after movie was over and I sat there with a blank stare.

I told her if there had been a time machine, like a spinning tunnel thing they went into, then I'd have been fine with it

Hollywoodland -- disappointing in a way. But then again, you pretty much get what you expect when you watch it. No surprises. And I'm convinced it was a suicide.

Hey all, I dusted off an old topic b/c of a movie we rented last night - "Reign Over Me", starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle.

We loved this endearing, dark comedy movie. If you are looking for a rental up at Blockbuster, give this movie a try. It's not your typical stupid-silly movie character role for Adam Sandler (what I expected, quite the opposite in fact). I thought AS was superb in this role. It might make you cry but it has nice, heart warming moments too.

Feel free to post your own movie rental titles and if they were worth your time and $.

Since the thread has been resurrected from the dead... a few that I have finally seen recently:

The Lake House: Loved it. I have it on DVR and put it on again one night, while doing things around the house, and watched parts of it. I really like Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.

Little Miss Sunshine: Strange little movie... makes you realize just how NORMAL your family is. :P I wanted to smack the grandpa into next week with his rude, crude and never-ending foul mouth, but other than him, I did enjoy the movie.

Elizabethtown: Kirsten Dunst gets on my nerves, but other than that, it was pretty good. I believe it was this past spring when I saw it, and I've already forgotten most details.

I know I've seen others, but just can't think of them off the top of my head. I also have a ton of movies recorded on my DVR that I haven't had a chance to watch yet.

Kelly - we watched all 3 movies you mentioned, this past year. We enjoyed all 3 too, especially Little Miss Sunshine and E-town. E-town was partially filmed in a small KY town my oldest daughter was interning at this past summer - Bardstown. She's also been to E-town a lot, since it's on the way to and from her college in KY. So she recognizes many scenes from the movie. Mainly I enjoyed the plot - cute story. Starting out sad but picks up speed. Similar to Garden State (another movie we finally watched and just LOVED!). Anyway, like you, Kirsten Dunst kind of bugs me too, she has a quirky way of playing her characters, almost too smug like, as if she's earned this right to play characters with a snobby air to them. I don't care for that. But at least she's not in that Angelina Jolie category for me. LOL

'Tis the season to rent and watch movies. January means serious hibernation mode....LOL

Note: I've edited the title of this thread to read 2008, not 2006/2007! We've been discussing rentals that long......

Anyway, I need rental recommendations for current new release movies. Which ones are best?

Thanks!

I rented Deck the Halls, it was boring and predictable...
rented Balls of Fury for the kids, it was terrible, but they liked it....

Went to the movies to see National Treasure 2 and it was pretty good! It reminds me of Indy Jones movies....

Waiting for a good chick flick or funny movie to rent....

We ended up renting Brothers Solomon - a funny movie. A bit odd at times but overall, many laughs. Several SNL past members in this movie.

We also rented the last disc of Lost, Season 3, for the finale and extras. We'll be in Lost Heaven today.....or should I say - Lost Purgatory/Limbo? LOL If you're a Lost fan, you'll get that last comment, since all who know the real Lost story swear it's not purgatory....he he

I saw several good chick flick options while walking that long, long back wall at my local Blockbuster. Can I remember them - no! Sorry, but I knew I couldn't bring one home (hubby would leave the room). One had Keri Russell in it, something a young woman baking pies. Looked good, for when hubby isn't home....LOL *Edit* - found it, it's called "Waitress":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473308/

I would suggest this chick flick since fans liked it on IMDB.

I've got a couple of movie rentals I'm watching tonight... I can only really remember two I've recently watched right now:

Casablanca, which was amazing, and Citizen Kane, which was just ever so slightly amazing-er.

My daughter who's a Junior in college is taking a journalism class this semester, called Intro to Cinema. They watched Citizen Kane on Thursday! How ironic that you should mention that movie......
