XTRP???

#1 Postby Jim Cantore » Fri Sep 08, 2006 9:01 pm

Why does it always forecast a streight line? It beelines Florence into the Carolinas.

XTRP stands for extrapolated....meaning if the current motions direction and speed continued over the next 5 days, that line is that situation.

extrapolated is the course that florence would take if it kept going straight.

It's not a model. XTRP stands for extrapolation. It's the current motion, extrapolated through the forecast period. Nothing else -- no smoke and mirrors.

Extrapolation is just the continuation of an existing line. The existing line is the current motion.

It's very useful sometimes to look at potential acceleration (both speed and direction) of a storm down the road.

Well, it is the only way you can tell current heading/speed on a model map as they don't write it anywhere. Other than that, no, it's pretty pointless.

It isn't entirely pointless, but it definitely should not be placed on the computer model graphics.

BS,

It is helpful to show where it's currently going in comparison to the models.

Sometimes xtrap out performs the bamm. We have 2-3 discussions on this every year but keep those questions coming newbies. You will learn a ton here as long as you are not afraid to ask!
