Yes, in 2006 we have 70 to 100 tornadoes in Germany, may be more. At this time more than 200 cases are under investigation - many of them were tornadoes, some were downbursts. You can have a look at our german tornado list here: http://www.tornadoliste.de, but it's in german language. "Verdacht" means case is under investigation, all other cases were confirmed tornadoes. They did damage in the tens of millions dollars this year alone and we had two killer tornadoes. But most people here in Germany think tornadoes are common in US and here we have only small things called "windhose". So much things to do in off-season...

Is that correct?

No, there are many tornadoes in Germany, Benelux, northern France and UK each year.

doesn't the UK get the most tornadoes when averaged out for tornadoes per square mile?

No "off-season" for me. I'm already preparing presentations (hurricane talks) for various conventions that start in October and continue through May. Looks like I may be in New Orleans 3 times in the coming months (Clean Gulf in Oct, Underwater Intervention in Dec., and NHC in April). Not speaking at the NHC, though.

I'll be spending long hours with our programmers this winter tweaking our hurricane program and graphics. Lots of time on the road next spring at conventions and seminars talking about hurricanes or meeting with clients.

Derek, will you be at the NHC in April? I certainly feel a lot better than when I saw you at the AMS meeting last spring - right after my head-on collision on the freeway. Ribs are almost pain-free now after 6 months.

Studies back in 1998 showed we had the most per km^2. Since then the Netherlands has been found to be more active that way. The UK is roughly 1.5 times as active as the USA per km^2 but wait for my paper in the International Journal of Meteorology to see the actual figures.

Hi P.K.,

but may be here in Germany we have more tornadoes than UK. Research began just a few years ago. It will take some years untill we know enough to clear this.

The numbers are a lot higher now for the UK than just a few years ago as well. For instance 2004 to 2005 saw 164 reported tornadoes. You'll have to go a long way to beat the Netherlands though, you would need around 350 a year to beat it! (Figure for the Nertherlands is based on a paper Nikoli Dotzek wrote a few years ago).

350 per year in the netherlands? I can't believe this. Sure?
Ah I see you mean number per square unit, ok.

During the off season I just wish for some Gulf coast snow and watch for severe weather.

I still post here during the Atlantic Non Season. But I stay busy with running between ballet and soccer on three different days and not counting school.

Well I follow systems year round too but life has got to have balance. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't have more to do than watch sat photos 365 days a year. There's more to life than just tropical cyclones at least for most everyone but the people that responded to this thread. Whatever trips your trigger folks.
