I didn't see that, but had heard about the lack of remorse when reading a story online earlier. Most states would give five years for the animal cruelty alone.
I know from my experience in SC that the law reads: whosoever mutilates, tortures, or cruelly kills an animal or, by omission or commission, allows it to be done is guilty of a felony and must be imprisoned not less than 180 days or not more than five years.
Many other states' statues are worded almost identically. So they should get the five years, plus any other charges.
But, there is one thing that I hope is not overlooked. Anyone who would do this is a psychopath and is MUCH more likely than an average person to kill a human being at random. The day they leave jail, they should be off to the state hospital where they can live out their lives without killing other members of society who've earned the right to remain a part of it.
