The model is called HWRF which stands for Hurricane Weather and Research Forecast model. It has been in development since 2002.

Here is a link to a tutorial on the model. You will need Power Point or the Power Point viewer to run. Click on the Hurricane Modeling link under the Wednesday Dec 13 Agenda to start the presentation. It compares HWRF with GFDL for several storms over the last few years.
