Eastern Atlantic lost its punch?

This has nothing to do with this year because its way to early but i've been thinking that I have not seen a CAT 2 or higher form East of Puerto Rico in a very long time. Im men correct me if im wrong but has there been a WEST BOUND storm stronger than CAT 2 since GEORGES of 98?(Im sure Luis can remember) I think this is part of the reason why were seeing so much land falling MAJOR Canes...Thier all reaching thier Max peaks right in our back yards..I think my point here is the E Atlantic has become an unfavorable area to support Huricanes..

Yes...he became a major hurricane well before he reached the Caribbean.

If your analysis is true, then we have to conclude that the Western Atlantic has become more favorable for tropical cyclone formation based on the past 3 seasons. Nonetheless, I don't think it's a pattern.

Actually, Ivan was briefly a cat 4 out there before reaching the windwards...135mph

Seems like storms that develop in the far eastern atlantic are more influenced by troughs that can recurve them. The weaker systems seem to ride the ridges west more often.

Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Katrina, and Rita all had cape verde origins, but by the time they were able to get going, they were ether

1. Far enough west to be cleared of anything to curve them out
2. Too far west where they'd run into land anyway
3. Far enough south to avoid being turned

That's true...i believe katrina & rita were right off the bahamas/south florida before they developed...that was part of the beginning of the problems with those storms menacing land.

I suspect what you are asking is if there has been a storm stronger than CAT 2 moving across the Leeward or Windward Islands from the Central Atlantic. If so, there was Ivan in 2004, Georges in 1998 and 1995 had a couple. Hugo in 1989, Allen in 1980 and David in 1979. Then you have to go all the way back to 1966, Esther was a CAT 3. The late 50's and early 60's had several. The 1940's did not have any.
Their were a lot of hurricanes in the area between 1760 to 1790, a very active era, but no telling the intensity.

In 1966 there was Inez,a cat 3;Cleo in 1964 cat 3,Donna in 1960,cat4.....

Floyd 1999 was a cat4 but was down graded before it got to NC. Fran was a cat 3 a weak 3 but a 3 when she hit NC. All the rest I have to look up. I am not awake yet.
