Re: Major Hurricane DEAN: (8 PM page 291) Discussions, Analysis

My opinions are not endorsed by Storm2k:

Taking a straight edge to the current track on the screen I would say Dean might come closer to Chetumal than first forecast. They (could) see much higher winds. The southern eyewall might only be 10-15 miles north if the current track holds.

That is true to them. But to us the matter of it being a cat4 or cat5 is important. Like your team winning the football game.

I hope you didn't mean this in the way I read it....

By sat presentation alone Dean looks to be deepening further...eye is starting to clear out and warm by the looks of WV.

Also, honestly, this thing is going to get VERY close to Chetumal....putting a straightedge on the northern eyewall, if it were to head due west the northern eyewall would BARELY miss Chetumal. Looks like on this heading, Dean might pass right over Chetumal, putting them in the southern eye.

I think we are witnessing a category five hurricane intensifying as it approaches land.

This might redefine catastrophic.......

This thing is strengthing big time. The eye is clear and warming fast with reds wraped all the way around. Reminds me of Katrina at her peak or Mitch. In fact with the colder cloud tops=it can bring the winds to the surface. Making the .9 possibly the one to use. Which if so this is closer to 170 mph. Who knows one of the pro's will likely have to see if I'm right or wrong.

It looks in the last couple of frames it has jogged or wobbled to the WNW a bit.

I'm sure he will be fine, though the continued strengthening is troubling. I gave a fleeting thought about meeting him in Cancun. Just didn't have enough time to do it, plus there was a chance Dean was heading to Texas

yes I do see a wobble WNW...but that is pretty consistent with the NHC forecast points.

I hope this appropriate to post this here. However, my heart goes out to those in harms way and also know how it feels to have devastation in your own backyard.

Having watched this from a group of thunderstorms to now the most powerful storm on the planet at this time I can just sit here with my jaw dropped open and in a sense numb. I'll wake up in the morning and see the sun but many many others won't. Best we all remember that tonight as we temper our glee of a great storm with the sadness for the loss of life it will bring.

The Riviera Maya is in deep trouble. I stayed at the Bahia Principe-Tulum resort in 2003. It was about 45 minutes south of Cancun.

I never did go and see the Mayan Ruins in Tulum. I did go horseback riding on a beach about 15 minutes to the north of the resort. I couldn't help but think of that resort, the horses, etc. during Wilma and now Dean.

I'm guessing bullseye on the forest preserve and Majahual inside the southern part of the eye.

Our friend in Chetumal (may) have bought 10 miles there.
