Interesting. As a business owner, on the rare occasions when we quote a mistaken price, I call the customer and tell them it was a mistake and offer the correct price. Then they can take it or leave it. I have had customers call me when the price quoted was an obvious mistake, and specifically give me the chance to correct it, too.

It's funny what some people are willing to excuse, though. :)

Some folks find enjoyment in beating another person out of a dollar. The people that purchased the cheap gas knew exactly what they were doing. Taking advantage of another mans error.

As a small business owner.......I have had similar errors happen in bids. You learn to absorb the loss and move on.

There are quite a few sign shops in our town with probably just as many mom & pop shops doing business out of their house. I have to get that customer in. I have bills and salaries to pay. If that customer sees that I will honor that "advertised" price even though it is a loss to me, he'll be back. It's happened and I have a loyal customer out of it. I wasn't "excusing" it either. It's just sometimes you have to suck mistakes up.

In my area, back in the 90's there was a gas station owner who in intentionally marked his gas WAY down and called the area's biggest radio stations with an "anonymous tip" that there was a pricing accident that led to cheap gas at that particular station.

At the time, gas was 95 cents and he'd "accidentally" put it in at 9 cents.

Everyone within a few miles swarmed to the station, he acted surprised and fixed the "error." But a lot of the people who were already there went ahead and got 95 cent gas since they were there.

He sold only about 200 gallons at the reduced rate. The story was talked about on radio and TV stations for a week. So he basically got a sharp increase in business and a ton of radio and TV advertising for less than 200 dollars.

Arrogance? Me? Are you kidding? Your first response to me (which wasn't a reply to you, btw) was, "How many times do I have to say this? It may have been morally incorrect, BUT IT WAS NOT DISHONEST! You may look it up in the dictionary if you wish, but it only reaffirms my point."

How many times do I have to say this? So Squarethecircle has spoken, so let it be done. I can't believe you called me arrogant. I'm far from it. I have even replied to your somewhat cocky comments with smileys and "lol," trying to keep things somewhat in jest.

Goodness.

Please, at least for my sake, could you stop using it?

your arrogance does not become you.

Like I said before, people were opportunistic, not dishonest.

Errors have consequences, and now the owner is paying for it.

For example:

Opportunistic: You find a 20 dollar bill while walking in the park and keep it.

Dishonest: You find a 20 dollar bill inside of a wallet with an ID and you keep it.

if you find the bill you have no one to return it to. If you buy gas frrom a station that normally does not sell gas that cheap and you can physically tell them - dishonest.

One of my ver favorite stories to tell is when I had very little years ago with 2 small kids. We couldn't have a real Christmas tree due to allergies but we also didn't have an artificial tree. Just before Christmas I found a display model that was absolutely gorgeous that they had marked down to $25. I asked it that was indeed the right price as it was originally $125. They said yes, and to ring it up a manager had to be called. I noticed they rang it up at $5 and I mentioned their error. The manager said "No error, Merry Christmas". It pays to be honest. No, you may not be rewarded right then as I was, but in years to come or when you are knocking on that gate it will happen.

That's different, it's called "stealing".

No, I find it fits very well. And can we please stop what with all the calling names and the desperately trying to find each other wrong and junk? Hopefully, as you can understand, it's gotten to the point where it's both kind of pointless and not at all fun.

I don't believe it was meant to be fun in the first place, unless you find all of this a big joke. Due to the fact that this topic is now beginning to deteriorate into name calling I am locking the thread. It appears their is no more discussion to be had concerning this. We will agree to disagree.
