Re: TX winter weather thread: Hard freeze threat this week?
Cloud layer to our West looks pretty thick. May keep temps in check after they arrive...

Based on the satellite motion, it looks like we have about 5-7 hours until the clouds arrive (assuming they do not dissipate some before they get here). That means sometime just before sunrise. I could definitely see it being possible that temperatures continue to fall through 3-5am and then start to level off or even rise a degree or two by sunrise. Probably will not make much of a difference though, because by 3-5am we should already be well below freezing in most places.
On a wishful thinking note...wouldn't it be cool if we could perhaps squeeze a stray flurry or two out of those clouds? It would certainly make for an interesting morning, that's for sure! The chances are probably slim to none of it happening with all the dry air, but you never know..

I was down to 25.5F overnight, but have since warmed to 29.5F after the clouds moved in.
BTW - Hooks has reached 26F, IAH has reached 27F and Conroe has reached 23F...so this has definitely been the coldest morning of the season. We are just lucky that the clouds are moving in now so that we didn't get much colder than that.

OK, I'm going to switch subjects momentarily from the Great Thermometer Watch of Southeast Texas to the Great GFS Watch for Upcoming Wintry Weather.
Both the 0z and 6z GFS show not one but several possible wintry weather events for Texas in the next 15 days!! And as EWG has pointed out, this is not the first series of runs that shows this scenario. For several days now, the GFS has suggested a major pattern change by mid month.
Enjoy

Well after all that, my low was only 30F.
The two closest stations had lows of 29.7F and 28.4.
Thank God for the clouds! They saved us from a hard freeze and parts of Houston to Galveston didn't even get to freezing!! Yeah!!

It looks like it got down to 21.8 at 3:55 am but has warmed to a blistering 26.6 at 8:00 am..
Wind has picked up this morning to 6-10 mph from the east under cloudy skies..
Now on to the possible winter weather in the near future..

9 hours below freezing at the Big Airport.
Oddly enough, no frost to scrape off the windshield. I guess my car never black body radiated itself down to 19ºF.

Portastorm,
The GFS record on cold weather is about as good as OU's recent bowl record.

I had to say that this morning.

GFS beyond 180 is not good for anything but general trends.
BTW, if it was up to me, if computation time/power is an issue, shorten GFS runs to 240 hours, but don't drop the resolution to T180 at 180 hours.
That said, the 240 hour ECMWF does show a pattern that would tend to direct cold air towards Texas, and maybe, just maybe, throw some Pacific air over top of it.

Unless we have enough snow or freezing rain to cancel kid's school and my work.
Can you imagine the carnage of anyone silly enough to drive on the sky-high on/off ramps for Beltway 8 where it crosses major highways?
Hoooo-doggie!
