Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
If that happens (and it's only 3 days out!), I'm going on a road trip.

Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
Game on?
From ABC 33/40 in Birmingham:
Snow Possible Late Friday Night/Sat AM
January 16, 2008, 9:08 pm | James Spann | Forecast Discussion
The models have been more bullish with the idea of another Gulf wave Friday night and Saturday morning. The NAM did pretty well on today’s system (much better than the GFS), and we have to give this idea some merit. And, with Arctic air blowing into Alabama Saturday, this snow could accumulate (how much we don’t know yet), stick around for a while, and make for some icy travel Saturday morning.
Stay tuned… I will have much more on the morning discussion and Weather Xtreme video update, which will be posted by 7:00 a.m…..
Hopefully today was just a little preview.

Well GFS pretty much sucked on this system and Nam is looking really good for Pensacola...and only 3 days away!

GFS looks horrible for Saturday. No moisture north of the freezing line(which is in Central AL). Hope it's wrong again.

00z GFS not as impressive as the NAM, but still interesting...

One thing's for sure - - this run definitely looks better than what the GFS was spewing out just a few runs ago. Take a look at what the 6z GFS showed for the same timeframe: http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod ... p_078l.gif . Things definitely seem to be heading in the right direction!

That shocked me too. I know I've seen snow in the daytime before, but it's been a long time(usually in the morning), not in the peak of the afternoon.

Let's get through Saturday first.

One thing is for sure, this pattern is very active and about as favorable for snow as it gets.

Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
NOGAPS and CMC onboard! GFS seems to be an outlier.

From ABC 33/40:
MORE RAIN/SNOW? Another wave is expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico late tomorrow, and it will spread rain up into the southern part of Alabama late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. To the north, a strong Arctic front will move into our state tomorrow night, and the big question is, of course, will the Arctic air phase with the Gulf moisture for some snow over Alabama.
At this point, we will mention a chance of rain for the I-20 corridor (Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston) tomorrow night, with the potential for a changeover to snow after midnight, and into the pre-dawn hours on Saturday. At this point, it looks like the greatest chance of snow will be north of a line from Eutaw to Clanton to Roanoke. There will be some potential for some accumulation; perhaps 1 inch or a little more along I-20. With Arctic air invading the state along with plunging temperatures, this could mean some travel issues for a period Saturday morning across North-Central Alabama. We will fine tune this forecast tomorrow as the system begins to get its act together.

Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
OK. Help me out here. The NAM seems to show at least a possibility for winter precip Saturday for Columbia SC (center of the state) if I am looking at it correctly. Howevere, no me ntion of a possibility by NWS or local mets. What do you more seasoned weather watchers think??
thanks

Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
Seems like everyone is looking ahead for the weekend already - but just to tie things up with the current storm -
Started snowing in Downtown Asheville (where I'm located) at about 9:00 PM last night. Looks like we got about 3", then a change to sleet/freezing rain sometime around daybreak. It's currently 31 degrees with light freezing drizzle. Looking at the radar, looks like the back edge of precip not too far away. So.............the weather guys really did a pretty good job with this one here. Points slightly south (Fletcher, Hendersonville, Brevard) picked up 4-5."

Starting snowing in Charlotte around 10:30 last night. My area-southside, looks to have picked up 1 1/2 inches before the sleet and freezing rain set in. Still white outside, but grass poking through due to rain. Dangerous black ice potential this evening into Fri a.m. maybe even some freezing fog.

Re: Snow in the deep south Mid January?
My sister called me yesterday to gloat that they were having snow flurries and also sleet. SHe lives in Leeds. She said nearby in Moody it was more snow and less sleet. My nephew loves the snow so I hope it pans out for this weekend.
