El Paso and Texarkana ain't exactly sister cities...

I'm not super opposed to the idea, but honestly. It's kinda stupid.

Florida is and always should be just Florida, in my opinion. If we're doing this, you might as well have Texas and Texico, North Michigan and South Michigan, North Alaska and South Alaska... you could do this with so many states.

Let's go for 100 states without purchasing any new land!!

Florida Panhandle and South Florida are different worlds. Some people call South Florida the sixth borough of New York. I know New York City area wants to split from New York state. New York City and Upstate New York are different worlds too. Northern California and Southern Oregon want to split and become the state of Jefferson. Texas can legally split into five states. I do not see that happening.

Try El Paso and Beaumont. They are 800 miles apart.

Living in Orlando, I agree. Include Central Florida in S. Florida please.

North Florida would become Flori and the south part we'd just call DUH.

Really a stupid idea IMO

Agreed. this is one Dumb, dumb idea. You can take a lot of states and find huge differences bewteen different areas.

I don't find the idea crazy or dumb. I believe most people in South Florida find that if all the money generated by the tourism industry stays in the area, we would have less problems. This is not because south and north are different culturally, geographically, politically, or anything else except for the economy. Of course a split will not be allowed by the Florida Legislature since if we take out Miami, the Beaches, and the Keys, what other resource would North Florida have to make money, Orlando, oranges, and the Beaches in the Panhandle? No disrespect intended, just an analysis.

By the way, do we have any Constitutional right to separate from an state and form a new one?

I understand your argument :D
and I am sure the Orlando area could make a case about things would be better if all the tourism revenue stayed in the area .
I just think its a dumb idea because this argument could be made for just about every state in this country . :D

I agree but the difference is that if anyone does something or just accept that nothing can be done.

The West Virginia/Virginia break-up occured when Virginia succeeded into the South. WVa's residents wanted nothing to do with succeeding from the Union, thus broke away in 1862, though it did not become "official" until June 20, 1863.

The initial thoughts had been in the works since at least 1831, because of unfair representation. The wealthy tidewater land owners were over seated in Va's state government, because slaves counted as people, and the western land owners were overtaxed.

Technically, it means that if Tallahassee and Capitol Hill both vote in favour, it can be done.

That's right, but what incentive does Tallahassee have to vote for this proposal?

South Florida is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a Borough of NYC. However is saying that is beyond help

I'd go with Cuba Libre for the name of the proposed new state

If West Virginia stayed loyal to the Union and didn't secede, why does it get the modifier. It should be Virginia, and the state with Richmond in it should be East Virginia or South Virginia.

Why do we have two Dakotas?

As far as I know, both states were entered to the union as north and south. No problems here, no split. Just like North and South Carolina.

In the case of the Dakotas is that who came first, north or south? Both were entered at the same time, and because n is before s in the alphabet, then ND is the 39th state, while SD is the 40th state.

Because WV seceded from VA. I doubt anyone was overly concerned over states' names after the war.
