Help Needed.. RE: Garage Door Opener

#1 Postby chadtm80 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 8:00 pm

So I have a friend of mine who has kicked someone out of there house.. I have assisted them in changing all the door locks as the keys were not returned.. However there was an automatic garage door opener in the home and the evicted party has one of the door openers in thier vehcile that was also not returned.. Is there anything that can be done IE: somehow reprograming it or anything at all, short of having to buy a whole new garage door opener?

Thanks

I would disconnect the darn thing. Locking it from the inside out. After coming home for work, he can open the door, putting his car away and then relocking it. It's a sure fire way to keep this person out of the garage!

Perhaps one the handy DIY types on S2K will have a better idea but we do this when we go on vacation. We never leave it connected to an automatic garage door opener. You just pull that chain, lock the door from the inside and walk around, coming out your front door. It's just more secure that way.

Read the directions for the garage door opener. They all work differently, but you should be able to reprogram them somehow. if you don't have the directions, look up the model on Google, you'll probably find them online somewhere.

I know on our garage door opener...there is a series of dip switches that you can change...and on the garage opener itself, also has a series of dip switches. I'm not sure if that particular one has the same settings. Just a suggestion.

:uarrow: Yep, the one we had in the old house was like that too. We had to change the settings because someone went by and somehow opened our garage door.

I'm not sure about the new ones - but they should have a similar way of changing them. But until they get that figured out I would definitely disconnect the opener.

The newer ones don't use DIP switches. It's all electronic. The instruction manual will tell you how to change the codes and then how to program the remotes.
