Remember...sometimes you can't get a true motion based on the vortex from a loose low level center. Sometimes the vorticee will swirl around the main circulation center...going NW..then W...then sometimes WSW....while the main LLC goes west.

Not saying this is what is happening...but it is a possibility.

But would a vortice have a warm core center?

VDM shows a warm core.

Sorry, this is one of my big pet peeves ;). It's "vortex", not "vortice".

Singular: vortex
Plural: vortices or vortexes

Sorry, don't mean to be a grammar Nazi ;)[/quote]

It is one of mine too and when I saw it I got a good chuckle!! LOL!!

Wthrman13 wrote:Looking closely at visible and water vapor loops, it looks like some strong winds in the mid-levels are undercutting the outflow in the NW quadrant, and perhaps bringing some drier air into the circulation as well, but the area where this occurring is pretty narrow in longitude. I don't see any evidence of strong shear, mid-level or otherwise, over the center itself, but there is little convection in the north quadrant for which to look for mid-level cloud tags. At any rate, Gustav is moving into this area of shear and it could at least limit intensification in the short term.

Convection is redeveloping smack dab over the low-level circulation marked by recon. It's not dissipating folks! I expect gradual re-organization and re-intensification this evening and tonight. It may approach the south coast of Cuba, but I don't think it's likely it will make landfall there.

Thank you for bringing some sanity to this thread.

Is the convection over the center getting sheared to the south?

I think it's just developing more rapidly on the south side, but not sure.

Yeah, there was dry air from 500mb to 300mb in today's 12z and 18z soundings in Kingston, too, so you may have something there.

Definitely took a battering, but this thing isn't going away, unfortunately. I don't think it gets very close to Cuba, unless it stays very weak. The ridge to the west has backed off a bit since last night, but not at all between 12z and 18z, so if Gustav intensifies tonight I think he might stray just a tad south of west actually, maybe even threatening Jamaica.

Gustav is only moving at 3KT and WNW based on the latest advisory.

It will re-intensify, it still has a LLC and a warm core. Convection is on the upswing as I type near the center and outflow is still impressive. Give it time.

5 day ending point is identical between last two NHC forecasts. 28.5N 88.5W, i guess just a slower path.

For the record. I believe only one person called it dead. There are several including myself who questioned the rapid intensification think when it had so many obstacles (land) in front of it. I believed it will struggle in the early term and that that is why several models failed to develop this including the GFS. The models were right early on and the people who like to hype were wrong. I simply pointed out that I didn't understand all the hype when GFDL threw out a bomb. I urged caution to find the middle ground in models. A couple of people didn't like that because they just want to see major/rapid development. ANd per the usual someone points something out negative and the people I disagree with want to slam you. So, lets leave it behind now folks. It probably will get stronger later on as I and others have said.

I know I didn't call it dead... all I said was "DIE, DIE!"... but, if this thing manages to travel north enough to travel the length of Cuba, I will say it's dead... doesn't look like that's likely, though.

I'm not sure I buy the latest center fix but here it is. Due north of the last position.

Well this excerpt from the 5pm discussion.
It should make everyone along the Gulf
coast feel comfortable.

It is important to note that there still remains significant
uncertainty regarding Gustav's ultimate track at days 3-5...and it
is much too soon to know what impact this system may have on the
northern Gulf Coast.

I'm almost willing to Wager making a bet similar to Ed if anything came towards upper TX Coast. I just don't see that happening. I think the NHC's track for landfall now is dead on give or take 75 miles east or west.

That is quite odd, are they saying this moved due north or did the center relocate?

Nice little canopy continuing to expand over the center.

Methinks the peninsula has been causing more issues with reforming than I would have thought it had....looking at some topo maps and stuff the circulation is having to come over some fair sized hills as it comes up from the south...cuban radar shows the moisture being squeezed out on the south side as it lifts. About another 25 miles west should start to allow some feed to come in fairly unrestrained....
