Chacor has nicely created a thread for the tornado threat.

Oh, it's way more expensive than that -- it'd be billions up on billions. But I agree; if you're going to have a major metropolitan city below sea level that is very prone to getting hurricanes, you should fortify it so you don't have to drain the place every 20 years. It's not like we live in Haiti and can't afford it that kind of protection.

my point is, price shouldnt matter when youre talking about protecting a major historical city, critical port, and population center. IT should have one of the finest levee systems in the world but its so amateur looking.

Fox News just had a video feed on a part of the levee and it's no longer splashover there, the water is sheeting over the top in continuous overflow.

There was no comment on the feed, I'm not sure if the studio guys even noticed.

Water is rushing over part of the Industrial Canal levee now like a waterfall, rather than overtopping. The WDSU feed is showing a good view of it.

I imagine you're going to have rough weather for a considerable period of time, unfortunately.

Now this is rich.

NOLA.com has a story that the L & N railroad bridge across the Industrial Canal is in the down position, causing a 3 foot backup of water.

They've been offered assistance in raising the bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge controls are now under water.

This is the kind of stuff that shouldn't ever happen with a comprehensive levee protection plan.

So I wasn't the only one who thought that was happening. I was surprised they didn't comment on it, that's why I didn't pay it any real mind.

This a much stronger "T" wall thank the wrongly engineered "I" walls that toppled last time; before the water even reached the top (17th street for example). USACE spokesperson said because of this and the cement footing, this will probably hold. Let's hope he is rigt, and thanks for the concern!

They did do that after Katrina... Kathleen Blanco, Mary Landrieu, David Vitter and a whole contingent of Louisiana officials went over there to find out if they could do something similar in Louisiana... they were told by the Fed. Gov't. that it was way too expensive of a project to take on...

Looks like we'll be entering the "core" shortly. We'll be getting the northern eyewall here. Power outages imminent.

If true and not hype, how irresponsible is THAT? They are having enough difficulties without human error.

That said, I am seriously concerned for all of S. LA and MS and their residents. Haven't heard how LSU2000's area has made out (Cut Off, LA). Houma and Lafayette appear to have taken/are in the process of taking a real beating.
