The same applies for North Texas. In fact, there is nothing to indicate that February is any snowier than December....

Except personal experience at least for me here in north Texas. Past decade or so MY experience with Dec\Jan are with ice storms and usually snow in Feb.

It's anecdotal evidence, which means nothing in the worlds of statistics...which climatology is based on. It's just a coincidence that snow has occurred more frequently in February than any other month in the past decade. The sample size isn't large enough to draw any long term conclusions.

It was simply an extension to fun thoughts that this weather pattern might give more fun for us, no need to get technical on it. She stated her opinion and I added to that fun. If it offends you in anyway, I apologize. No need to get too into it lol.

good point, but I see what he's saying. Other than some late Nov. early Dec. minor ice/freezing rain events, the last 8 years I've been back in the Dallas area it seems that late Jan through 1st week of March is the more "active" winter weather period. Maybe its because the major events of the past 3-4 years have been late Jan into mid Feb., of course this doesn't mean much in the scope of the long terms records...

First 40 something pages of this thread were pretty much concerned with the rare snow event we had here on Dec. 4th. Rest of the thread has been north Texas. It's time to even out this thread again, oh and I guess San Antonio/Austin area can get in on the act.

I sure hope you guys do! I'll be heading down to Houston next week to visit family, how fun that would be =P. Also the San Antonio\Austin area hasn't really seen much in the way of snow so lets keep ours fingers crossed

LOL dont feel bad, live lesss than 4 miles from rockwall, yep pics of wet dead grass is about all i can take also..

I was watching one of J.B.'s videos on Accuweather which he taped this morning and he's calling for brutally cold temperatures here in the deep south the week after New Years and also stated the possibility of snow along the I-10 corridor from Houston to Florida. He didn't say whether the snow might form north or south of the I-10 corridor. I live well south of the I-10 corridor, I'm less than 3 miles north of the beach so I'll probably get nothing more than cold rain at my location but J.B. also said the low temperatures going all the way down to Orlando would be the coldest temperatures this season and could threaten the citrus crops in Florida.

It's remarkable how consistently a 30 mile stretch of unremarkable prairie makes all the difference (Tarrant vs Dallas counties)

Perhaps elevation (not sure)? There's quite a big difference generally going west county per county when it comes to snow amounts too. It seems Fort Worth west has a similar climate (with snow etc) as West Texas while Dallas east conjures with east Texas (rains a lot). Or simply in the words of Portastorm, that darn omega block!

i have always wondered about that also..

I just think there is a big umbrella over the top of us in the winter

but in the spring we get all the storms right over my neighborhood here it seems..
every year its a major clean up 3-4 times of tree branches...ect
not sure how many tornadoes have hit within 10 miles of here, our house has been hit once early 90's (Roof torn off bad) and been missed by 1 block.. this year we lost two strong wood storage buildings in our back yard...

That has been my gripe forever. The eastern side always gets shafted. I always see Ft Worth, Denton, sometimes even Dallas getting action and its like our situation is always light. Its like all the different places that rain/snow line can form, and its green on our side.

ECMWF maybe flurries DFW early New Years eve, although 850 mb temps are border line, thicknesses < 540.
2m temps in the upper 30s then dropping to 32F by midnight. Should quickly end though...doubtful DFW sees much. GFS dries it out quickly though...and wouldn't be any snow...just light rain early.

Well, we should have known it was too good to last! Yesterday's agreement by all medium-range models on next week has been shattered by the 0z GFS. The GFS shows a stout cold front next week blowing through Texas but it is rather dry and the subsequent weather moderates to seasonal temps and more "dry." This run of the GFS is much different than the last few 0z and 12z runs of the model. However, the Euro and Canadian both continue to show a major-league cold front for later next week and include storminess (i.e. snow/ice/cold rain) for Texas.

Let's hope this GFS run is just a hiccup and the 12z run returns to harmony and sings Kumbaya with the Euro and CMC!
