I've been in India for 2 weeks but it looks like NWS Tampa is forecasting
3-4 days of very cold highs in the 50s/60s starting this weekend.
Looks interesting.

India's great. I visited for 2 weeks once too.
We're in the winter front pattern. Hard to say what January and February will do.

NWS Tampa Has lows near 40 for almost 4 days straight next week...WOW!
I'll be passing through newark on the flight back home (india to newark to tampa)
so I will get to see the snow on the ground there
But I don't think the airport people will let me play in it once I'm near the
airline gate- once you go through sercurity it is tight.

Yeah, this is definitely going to be one of the most prolonged Florida cold spells that I have seen in recent memory. 5+ days in a row with low temperatures flirting with freezing in central Florida and well below freezing in northern Florida is almost unheard of. Usually these cold snaps only last a day or two across the sunshine state.Tampa Bay Hurricane wrote:WOW!!! NWS forecasting LOW 20s for lows for 5 days straight for North Florida!!!

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Wetter & Cooler this winter
The length of the cold snap is unusal, but the intensity of the cold during that period certainly won't be unprecedented...in fact, temps don't appear to be on track to set any new record low high temps during the day or record min temps at night.
For example, the record low daytime max temps from 1/2 - 1/6 range from 40 to 48 deg in Tampa....for the high temps! The forecast for this week shows several days of temps in the 55 to 60 deg range for highs. Record lows for the same period range from 26 to 31 deg. Forecast lows this week will be 5 to maybe 10 deg warmer than that on the coast.
Similarly, in Miami, the record low daytime max temps from 1/2 - 1/5 range from 46 to 55 deg...for highs in Miami! Record lows for the same period range from 32 to 35 deg in Miami (at the airport...not in the inland suburbs). By comparison, the forecast for the next several days features highs in the mid to upper 60s and the lows in the 40s.
Looking back at 2009 even, the coldest low temps recorded at the primary South Florida weather stations were 5+ deg colder than the forecast lows this week:
Naples: 33 (Jan 22, 2009)
West Palm Beach: 33 (Feb 5, 2009)
Fort Lauderdale: 37 (Feb 5, 2009)
Miami: 38 (Feb 5, 2009)

The NWS forecast lows for the next few days are impressive to say the least. As jinftl pointed out above, this will not be the worst cold snap in Florida history by any means, but it will definitely be one of the longest in recent memory. Florida has not seen a cold snap of this length since at least 2001.
Here is a look at the current NWS forecast lows for a few selected cities over the next 5 nights:
**Below freezing values highlighted in blue**
Tallahassee - 27/23/19/17/23
Jacksonville - 29/28/25/27/31
Ocala - 25/25/24/23/26
Tampa - 33/32/34/32/38
Downtown Orlando - 34/33/31/31/35 (many of the suburbs..as well as the airport [MCO]..are forecast to be even colder)
Melbourne - 35/31/33/30/33
Fort Myers - 35/35/37/33/39
West Palm Beach - 41/41/39/34/39
Miami - 45/48/45/41/51

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Wetter & Cooler this winter
The forecast reminds me of december 1995.....my first winter in south florida and the last prolonged cool spell.....cold by local standards. From 12/21 through 12/28, the high temperature didn't reach 70 degrees in Miami, a relatively rare occurence. Three of those days featured highs in the 50's. Just like the current forecast, the '95 cold snap wasn't a record cold event as far as much in the way of daily record lows, but it persisted for longer than most cold snaps, even the record setting ones.
The highs/lows in Miami during the '95 prolonged cool down:
12/21/95: 64/55
12/22/95: 64/55
12/23/95: 62/55
12/24/95: 57/46
12/25/95: 59/39
12/26/95: 63/46
12/27/95: 62/46
12/28/95: 57/53
In true Miami style, the winds veered east by the 29th, and the low in Miami 3 days later on New Year's Eve only fell to 72 deg. The high on 1/2/96 reached 86!

Re: Florida Weather Thread: Wetter & Cooler this winter
Well I must say quite rare extended cold snap that has started here in S. FL that could last 7 days or longer it looks like. Will be monitoring the possible freeze threat but looks like only inland and NW portions of the CWA of S. FL as is typical for possible freeze events.
Here is an interesting snippet from NWS Miami:
SOUTH FL DOES GET SHOTS OF COLD AIR BUT TO HAVE IT FOR THIS
EXPECTED LONG DURATION IS RARE. TO PUT THIS COLD EPISODE WE ARE
EXPERIENCING INTO PERSPECTIVE...MIAMI`S LOW THIS MORNING FELL TO
49F AND IT LOOKS AS THOUGH WE WILL GO SOME TIME WITH LOWS AT MIA
BELOW 50F...AT LEAST 5 MORE DAYS. BUT IT COULD GO SEVERAL DAYS
LONGER IF WE DON`T MANAGE TO REBOUND ABOVE 50F LATE THIS WEEK BC
MORE COLD AIR IS ON THE WAY. THE LAST TIME THERE WERE 6
CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH LOWS BELOW 50F AT MIAMI WAS IN JAN 2001 AND
DEC 1989.
