Re: Oil enters the Loop Current and is headed to the Florida Key

BP has told the chairman of the House subcommittee on energy and the environment that it will be killing the live feed video of the spill at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico while it attempts to seal the well using the "top kill" procedure, Rep. Edward Markey said in a statement.

:uarrow: That's interesting. On the news tonight they were showing the flow coming up and commented about the difference in the "color". That difference being that it looks a lot darker. They mentioned that BP said the darker color didn't mean anything.

IMO I would think darker would mean a more concentrated oil. If that makes any sense.

Well, this muck of a mess continues and like all of you, it infuriates me. Wish a back up relief well had been drilled as a contingency plan initially, given how deep BP's drilling went! Rumors are beginning to float that the wear and tear on BOP is increasing, or has blown it off, thus allowing more and thicker oil to escape. This may be why BP didn't want live video tomorrow, as well as some discussion for a while they were not even going to proceed as planned with the Top Fill.

I'm glad President Obama is going down on Friday, even in light of the criticism of expense, time wasted, safety or other. I hope it lights a fire under our governments feet that currently is rightly smoldering, as a solution just has to be found less the Gulf be ruined. We put a man on the moon, didn't we?

Maybe a relief well or two drilled directly straight down or taking the path of least resistance into the reservoir with great speed, aided by our government, wouldn't be such a bad idea after all? Then US ships could just line up for the oil until the reservoir is drained. The probability of accurately intercepting the 12 inch round outer core of metal of the original well, in light of the reported problems already with the relief drilling (hitting rock, not moving through as expected based on BP's analysis) seems so off and even unlikely. Then what? What's the back up plan?

I've heard the darker color might mean that heavier oil is starting to flow out, instead of just the light stuff.

The mud injection will either work and seal the well or further damage the Blowout Preventer and piping going down the well and make the spill worse.

If it fails they might have to try this (which is what I think they should have done already):

I presume they are still trying the procedure, but imo what I see isn't any different than before except that the flow has now split into several different plumes now instead of just one big one.

It's not going to stop flowing all of a sudden. The mud is being pumped in and will slowly (hopefully) stop the flow. What I do remember them saying on abc news is that there's more mud coming out of there than they had hoped. The water is looking murkier than earlier this afternoon. It could take a few hours or a few days to see if it is going to work.

Kinda looks like they lifted the mud injector and oil is still spewing out of the concrete.. I don't think it's working..The oil looks like it is coming out with more pressure so it's has sealed it a little but not much.. Unless that's simply mud on the screen and no concrete yet.. I don't see them pumping anything in/onto it right now.. :(

Of all the links, I am finding this to be most explanatory and current (see comment section). You might wish to turn off one of the video feeds for computer reasons:

Also BP CEO just said all is going as planned, slow injection of mud and mix is occurring (which explains the brown gas/oil mix efflux) but it will take 24 hours before outcome is known.

The color is definitely lighter than before. It does look more like mud than oil as some have commented.

BP: 7,000 barrels of drilling mud pumped so far.

Here is some May 15 BP footage of the risers for comparison of the pressure during release:

Fingers crossed that this works. The images are amazing. I am so glad the 'live feed' is available to us all to see with our own eyes!

Hehe...look at this ad from the 1980's. I figure we need a laugh in the midst of this tragedy.

"We're bringing oil to American shores".

Btw, I believe the time on the feed is in GMT if you're wondering.

A few minutes ago, the live feed changed to a generalized brown out of the BOP region, rather than four or so individual pressured releasing holes as before. Questions are being raised: did the riser just blow up, change in current, more gas emitted along with mud/other? You can see some of the same effluent generally in the back ground as before. Will have to wait and see.
