I spent a vacation with Ike, in Houston, back in 2008. When I flew back, on approach to T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island, I looked down at the canopy below. You cannot see most houses from the air. Unlike flying into Houston, there are just far too many trees. In some places, entire neighborhoods cannot be see from the air. I remember, thinking about what I had just experienced with Ike, and concluded that if we were to get those kinds of sustained winds here in New England; RI, Central Ma, NE CT, with this thick green canopy, we would be in a very very bad situation. How long was Houston without power? A month to fully restore?
I do not think there are enough chain saws in New England to cope with the amount of downed trees that would result from those kinds of winds.
We were lucky to be on the MD Anderson power grid in Houston. We never lost power. People came from all over just to use the shower. This and because of loosing power for two weeks after the ice storm that hit us in central MA earlier that year, we bought a generator.
How long was Houston without gas? Weeks!
I am keeping a very close eye on this storm. Especially after seeing Bastardies' latest video. He said it very well, just a 50 mile jog west, and it becomes a much more impactive situation.
