Ran my first half marathon this Sunday

#1 Postby x-y-no » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:20 pm

The 13.1 Fort Lauderdale.

Fun event, and I actually beat my target time. I was aiming to finish under 2 hours, came in at 1:51:17. (that's an 8:30 per mile pace) 8-) That put me in the 80th percentile - 22nd out of 106 men in the 50 to 54 age group, 409th out of 2090 finishers overall.

I've been thinking of doing the ING Miami Marathon this January, but I'm pretty intimidated by the distance. Still thinking about it. :)

Wow. From one runner ( a 10ker) to you, very good. Happy, happy joy time. I ran my race October 30. I won my age group and got 19th overall, but got hurt. I ran a 43:02....but slowly recovering....

43:02, that's pretty good! I was running 10Ks a few years ago (before taking a bit of a hiatus from running) and my personal best was 47:44. My 10K split yesterday was 52:24, which is pretty good considering I was pacing myself for a much longer race. Might be fun to do a 10K now to see if I can improve on my old best.

So over the next couple of weeks I need to make a plan ... either I'm going to stick with running the half and see if I can bring my time down, shoot for 1:45 maybe. Or else I try to build up to the marathon (like I said ... kind of intimidating ...)

Well, I ran a 31:25 back in 1985...long time ago. I got it down to a 37:19 in 1997...and am trying to get to 39 again.....at 45. I got hurt, get this...coming on the last 200 meters. Sigh. I have a knots in my gastrocs and calves. This one flared up on me. I am back down to an 8:30 pace running, 7:30 should be next week and so on until I am back down in mid December. Very frustrating, I tell you. :) I am sure you will do well. 1:45 is nothing to sneeze at. I do not have any hankering to do a marathon. I swear if I do a half, I better get done by 1:30..or I will lose my mind. LOL

Yes but the 4 minute mile was conquered years ago!
Seriously, congrats. Now how about trying out the Run Barbados series early next month?

I'm training for the Walt Disney World Half Marathon in January. I'm shooting for a 10 minute mile.

I have some friends who have run the Walt Disney World Marathon and said it was a terrific event. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I've done a few shorter runs with Disney already. As with everythign else they're runs are well managed and everything is perfect (except sometimes the weather! :cold: ).

At least you would just be road kill. I would be classified as a road block.  I wish my arthritis would allow me to run. I need to push through the pain and at least walk.
I have nothing but respect for those who are serious runners even though I do question the sanity of some I have seen running in freezing weather.

Awesome, Jan.

Are advancing years starting to work to your advantage yet?

I keep telling myself that I'm going to start entering bike races again. Maybe when I hit 55.
