newtotex wrote:Whats up to all, this is my first post and im new to Texas, hence the name hah. With the talk of the cold thats going on, I had one question, are lows in the 10's-20's unusual here? I moved from Alabam and that isnt really that unusual (atleast the 20's), usually occuring a few times each winter, even down to the gulf. This is an awsome forum to read by the way, keep up the good work!

Welcome aboard! Where in Texas are you located? The northern half has very similar temperature variations as north-central Alabama. Dallas and Birmingham would be good comparisons with teens and 20s not too unusual. While southern Texas is more reminiscent of Mobile or Montgomery depending on how deep into TX where 10s and 20s are very cold. Beyond that the Panhandle and south plains are much more like Denver.

CBS 11 seems to think so too.

I'm glad Pete's getting on board. Wonder if he has finally discovered this board  . I've seen him get burned quite a few over the years regarding winter weather.

I've meet him and he's a good guy, but he over hype these events too much...lol

On a side note the FTW NWS said models having trouble with forecasting the low and it may hang back till Sunday, that would change everything going into Monday.

Well if you live in Denton winters are actually on average slightly "snowier" than they are in central Alabama, it isn't that unusual to get a decent snow event every other year in the far northern sections (ie: Denton, ect) of the DFW area.

Like the February event cold air comes in a little quicker and upper low hangs back and gets a little stronger and moves slowly across NTX........ :froze:

That's what I'm going to hope for :ggreen:

The Shreveport (KTBS3) News Station doesn't seem very optimistic.

It's kind of weird how there is not cool down until Tuesday

Maybe but he can visit your kids schools and the ladies all have hot flashes or get large underpants thrown at him visiting a senior center. I guess Pete does what WFAA hired him to do.

Knew I had a feeling about this system last night! There just looked to be so much cold air to the northeast to just simply put aside...And hey in the long range the GFS did predict a foot of snow

Yeah, kind of like the Feb. 2010 "Dozen Inch Doozy" that the GFS showed, lost, and then found again.

Joe Bastardi calls the Canadian the crazy uncle model.

I think the GFS is the "Absent Minded Profesor" model.

I'm excited might turn out to be something. Funny how things can change so quickly. Yesterday around this time it was getting a little depressing.

I believe last night I asked the question that if it doesn't get quite as cold as we had previously thought, would it increase the chances for a winter storm in east Texas and the South because the air wouldn't be bone dry and maybe we could get some moisture to come into play. It looks like that may be what's going to happen. Not the record cold that we thought, but cold enough for some wintry precip. My question got totally ignored by the way. :D

Well the storm on Sunday I don't believe would be effected by that as it's coming in before the really cold airmass hits us. It was just a matter of the timing of the moisture and if it would be cold enough.
