You may be right. Given my untrained eyes looks like the northern part of Maria is experiencing strong windshear while the southern part is fighting to stay alive with the heavy convection east south east of Martinica.

this is a mess.. I have found 3 vorts within this very ob long gyre... 2 down in the SE Carribean... 1 wsw of St. lucia the other just north of the ABC islands... then the last one is to the NNE of Guadalupe. its may be possible that the northern part lifts out and leaves the southern energy behind... all in all its a mess and not sure the models are going to do well with this in the short term.. throws a wrench, crowbar , and some nails into the mix..lol

yeah, it will be interesting to see how it is handled. I notice Avila said he is not giving up on it yet.
