2012 U.S Severe Weather (Videos-Photos-Stats-Forecasts)

#1 Postby cycloneye » Thu Jan 26, 2012 6:38 pm

I am creating this thread (Like a mother thread) to allow the peeps to keep track of how the severe weather season in the U.S is doing in terms of activity. Of course, the members can post as we always do in this forum individual threads of specific dates of upcomming severe weather events. In this thread, the peeps can discuss all about how the season is doing in terms of the stats. Also videos of 2012 tornadoes will be posted and the forecasts for the next severe weather events will be posted as well.

2012 started very active with 70 tornadoes in the U.S as of January 26th. Let's see how this season turns out to be down the road.

The unusual January severe weather continued today in the Deep South with several tornado warnings in AL and MS. We had an interesting few minutes at work. The warning sirens went off just before noon and a wall cloud passed directly over Mobile shortly thereafter. I saw over on Accuweather that it was visible on the weather cams. Luckily nothing touched down, but still it was enough to get the adrenaline pumping.

The two most active Januarys and only two above 2012 (1999 and 2008) had complete opposites in February.

January 1999 was just INSANE, with 212 tornadoes. However, February was fairly quiet, with only about 15 tornadoes. January 2008 was definitely active as well, with 88 tornadoes. That February, on the strength of a huge outbreak to start the month, had a record 147 tornadoes. (Even without Super Tuesday it would have still been well above normal!)

Which way will February go?

2008 did not have the complete opposite for February as your second paragraph states. And remember, there is a "Super Tuesday" this year as well...will it turn out like 2008? :1:

I thought that having a main thread for general stats and graphics about how the 2012 severe season is progressing as the weeks and months go by.

The 2011 severe weather season caused 551 fatalities in the U.S. Let's hope that much much fewer people lose their lives on this 2012 season.
(Two fatalities so far in 2012)

I mean February 1999 was inactive and 2008 extremely active.

Super Tuesday this year is in March (6 to be exact), not February.

The reports come as a surprise as I think these severe events were not expected.

Tornadoes of 2012 - 177 Confirmed through 05z March 5

#19 Postby SamSagnella » Thu Feb 09, 2012 10:54 am

Good day, everyone! It's been quite a while, but I hope y'all are doing well. :D

Some of you may remember that back in the mid 2000's I had a website that tracked all confirmed United States tornadoes, which I had to let go defunct while I was a college student. It has taken me a long time, but I'm finally relaunching the concept -- with a new twist.

Check it out:
http://www.tornadoesof.com/

As always, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
