Glad to see blue sky to the northwest. Still have ice coating my car, hopefully that will melt quickly once the sun comes out.
I for one am glad Austin Community College canceled all classes today. The first alert came out just after 8 stating they would open after 12, then another alert came about 35 minutes after saying they will be closed all day. I would have had to leave at 2 for my 3 p.m. class and obviously it didn't warm up as quickly as they originally thought since ice is layered on my car.

I believe they are referring to the area/airmass of drier dew points which is heading down into the Valley. Just like what happened in SC and SE Texas, once the precip starts falling in the Valley it will quickly drag surface temperatures down. There is no secondary surge of Arctic air, per se.

We're glad you're here and thanks for updating your profile. And to answer your question, no, I do not think HGX will extend the Winter Weather Advisory for the overnight.
I would not. This is not in the Advisory criteria...
From HGX Special Weather Statement:
THROUGH 7 PM...A BAND OF LIGHT SNOW FLURRIES WILL MOVE EAST INTO
THE REGION FROM THE HILL COUNTRY. NO ACCUMULATIONS IS EXPECTED.
DAMP PLACES AND PUDDLES ON THE ROADS WILL ICE UP ON ROADS AS
TEMPERATURES THAT ARE NEAR FREEZING CONTINUE TO FALL THIS EVENING.

And then the flip/flop (no pun intended) 18z flips us back to the warmer weather along with a side of severe storms. The GFS that is.

I was literally about to post the same thing. Hoping it holds together to get here. It looks like there is more moisture out west per this loop:

I dont believe the forecasters predicted this. Radar shows alot of precip over S.A. some of it is pink some yellow and blue, just looked out the window here at work in downtown S.A. and i dont know if my eyes are decieving me or wishful thinking but its sprinkling and looks like possible sleet pellets falling or maybe snow flurries flying around.

I'd like to get some reports as to whether this precipitation is even making it to the ground. The afternoon discussion out of Houston discussed the issue of returns showing up on radar and what may account for them :
SOME SLEET IS
STILL BEING REPORTED IN A FEW ISOLATED AREAS BUT FEEL THAT HEAVIER
RETURNS ARE DUE TO BRIGHT BANDING ASSOCIATED WITH SNOW FALLING
INTO THE WARM LAYER AND BEGINNING TO MELT. VERTICAL CROSS SECTIONS
TEND TO SUPPORT THE OBSERVATIONS THAT VERY LITTLE OF THIS IS
REACHING THE GROUND.

Any forecast I make is based on my opinion only. Please refer to the NWS or NHC for official forecasts.
12z European Ensemble Members: All 50 members showing snow for McAllen. Ensemble mean for event is 1 3/4" while deterministic is showing 2 1/2". Add to that another 2 1/4" of snow on Days 9-10 of the deterministic model. Let's see how well it verifies. By the way, Harlingen in the same boat, but deterministic showing them getting 3" of snow.
