TSUNAMI WARNING FOR WEST COAST

#1 Postby vbhoutex » Thu Sep 25, 2003 4:03 pm

An 8.0 earthquake occured near Hokaido, japan earlier today. This is what is called a "GREAT QUAKE", capable of producing a tsunami. Therefore Tsunami warnings have been posted for the entire West coast. The following link will give you more information.

Yikes! You don't hear about tsunami warnings for the west coast too often. I hope no damage or destruction happens out there.

Updating this after further investigation.

No tsunami reported at this time. It is a watch for the Aleutian Islands in AK and for information only for the rest of the west coast. Checking further to be sure. Sorry if we caused any alarm!!!

Here is a map of watches and warnings. http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/wwareas.gif

In this awesome year of record setting snows for DC metro, record rains, record tropical influence and now a possible tidal wave for the west coast, I am grateful to say that the Appalachians are volcanically inactive.

Not sure about a volcano in the Appalachians, but there is a dormant one located in the Waddy-Peytona area of KY, near Shelbyville. Last time I drove by (years ago), there was a radio tower on top of it. I'm gonna dig through the net and see if I can find a reference to it.

Wasn't there one of those in Alaska some years ago? I think I remember the water sucked right out of the bay up there.

Yes there was Lindaloo, did quite a bit of damage as I recall. Don't remember the year. Maybe early 90's.

Report from Los Angeles area:

Seems a lot of people are still not aware of the earthquake that occured in Japan. Will let you know if the advisory is upgraded to a watch or warning. I only know of one other occasion when a tsunami watch was issued for the west coast on June 23, 2001, but there was no tsunami.

Estimated arrival time of any tsunami is between 11-midnight PDT, so have lots of time to watch.

Update:

"NO TSUNAMI DANGER EXISTS FOR ALASKA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, OREGON, OR CALIFORNIA. HOWEVER, SOME AREAS MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES."

So, doesn't look like the west coast or Alaska will be affected by this massive earthquake.
