My niece just arrived in Havana last week for the fall semester. It's difficult for me to find hurricane related info from Cuba. If you all have links, could you share them with me?

She's coming from New Orleans, so she's no stranger to flooding rains. But I'm concerned about the eye moving over them. How well do they cope with hurricanes there? Thanks.

It might rival Luis when it arrives in the vicinity of the NE Islands.

Moving west earlier than expected.. or maybe just another wobble

Good news for the islands but bad news for FL. It would decrease chances of DR/Cuba disrupting it as much which would allow a stronger system to head more NW into the peninsula.

I remember yesterday's track reasoning was that if Irma continued moving more SW than expected vs more west then, a Florida landfall would be inevitable. Has that reasoning changed today?

Stronger ridge closer to the straits compared to yesterday's run.

http://www.stormcarib.com/ has hurricane correspondents from many of the islands . They post ongoing conditions as they can.
The problem is that most of us will probably lose power during the storm and maybe even for days after the storm.

Looks like they might be returning, although they're still at 700mb. Hopefully, all is okay.

Talked to our former neighbors in the lower Keys and they've already got someone to help them get their shutters up and secure the outside items. They're planning on leaving in the next day or two.

Looks like the next point was supposed to be her last on the wsw heading so maybe she's straightening out a little early. Or it's a wobble..

Smart people. Most people are off of work today so there isn't going to be much time between now and next weekend.

Irma's outer bands to me are somewhat annular-like. Does anyone know what the Annular Hurricane Index for this is? (I don't know where to look but I think it's released along with the RI index.)

Really would like to see a true W shift instead of just a temporary westward wobble from WSW, for the sake of those in the islands, at least.

Looks to me like a much larger eye is trying to form amidst these constant ERCs, which would be a pretty common progression for a storm like this. Unfortunately that would increase the radius of hurricane force winds... which is also in the nature of a storm like this.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

The governor of Puerto Rico has declared a preemptive state of emergency and activated the territory's National Guard ahead of Hurricane Irma

"We have established protocols for the safety of all," Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said, urging islanders to take precautions.
